The $8 Trillion Market Businesses Keep Ignoring
What would you think if the business world started ignoring the US, Brazilian, Indonesian and Pakistani markets combined? That would be mad – surely no business would turn its back on such a substantial part of the world?
As it turns out, the vast majority of businesses are doing just that, by ignoring a potential market the same size as these four countries combined: that is, the market represented by people with disabilities.
15% of the global population lives with some form of disability - 1.3 billion people worldwide. If you add that number to their friends and family, the total annual disposable income of this largely undervalued group amounts to $8 trillion.
Three days ago, we celebrated the 30-year anniversary of the creation of the International Paralympic Committee, and last year was the 50
th
anniversary of the first Paralympic games. What was a bold idea at the time has since become an important part of the sporting calendar.
Sport has recognized the value of the 1 billion living with disability around the world, we need business to do this too.
I am calling on the leaders of the planets most powerful brands to stand up with the Valuable 500 and to be the catalyst for ending the current exclusion crisis. At the World Economic Forum annual meeting in January, I, with the backing of some of the world’s most prominent business leaders, launched The Valuable 500, a disability inclusion initiative that is aiming to get 500 global businesses to place disability on their board agenda.
We are making great strides. I was proud to announce last week that over 100 bold first movers have taken the step to disability inclusion by signing up to
The Valuable 500
, with a further 200 businesses in the pipeline. From banks to broadcasters, and accountancy firms to advertisers, global businesses have taken the leap and pledged tangible commitment to inclusion.
This has also been a global mission, with US businesses including Boeing, Bloomberg, Microsoft, Omnicom and Accenture signing up. We need all businesses in the US to make a commitment to disability inclusion.
To become part of The Valuable 500 businesses, need to:
- COMMIT: Table disability on your board agenda from 2019
- ACT: Make ONE firm commitment to action in 2019
- AMPLIFY: Share your commitment to The Valuable 500 internally and externally
To have over 100 business who are willing to take this first step is amazing. Building a global society that recognizes the value of the one billion people around the world needs to be led by business. We’re on a mission to make sure businesses across the world recognize the value of the one billion people living with a disability.

The award – a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) and the Office of Disability Employment Policy – recognizes federal contractors who are leaders in expanding opportunity to Americans with disabilities in the workplace.
The deadline extension means your organization now has more time to complete and submit your EDI Award application!
This year's Award recipients will be recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor for their work and will receive a three-year moratorium for OFCCP compliance evaluations. Additionally, a post-award "Year of Engagement" will provide opportunities for contractors to share their best practices on disability inclusion with other employers.
During this extension, employers who have already submitted an EDI Award application can update their application if desired.
Applications now close November 1, 2019. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to have your business recognized for its commitment to supporting Americans with disabilities.

Choosing Among Options For Computer Users With Low Vision
Here at JAN, many of our assistive technology (AT) related vision calls continue to revolve around computer access. One of our most commonly requested resources is external computer screen magnification. People are usually interested in this option due to its relatively low cost. A similar type of first-line equipment for vision related accommodations is a larger monitor.
People who try to combine these approaches are often particularly disappointed as external computer screen magnification is only typically available in sizes up to 24 inches. While this approach can work well for people with milder forms of a vision impairment, or who are in the early stages of a progressive condition, external magnifiers and larger monitors are rarely sufficient to provide an effective accommodation in the long term. For this reason, JAN’s sensory team routinely provides additional resources on screen magnification whenever a consumer requests information on external computer screen magnification and/or larger monitors. Depending on the nature and degree of an individual’s vision impairment, a combination of optimized hardware, an up-to-date operating system with accessibility features enabled, and assistive software may be needed to achieve an effective accommodation. Training on the use of these accommodations may also be needed both for the employee requesting the modifications and for the IT professionals providing support.
