October Council Seminar Series event: Implicit Bias and What You Can Do

Join us October 8
from 2-3 p.m. in Room 3512 of the Memorial Union where Katy Swalwell, Associate Professor, School of Education, will discuss implicit bias, help us to recognize it, and address how we as Iowa State University employees can begin to address it.

If you are unable to join us in person, the session will be  livestreamed and can be viewed online using guest access. If you are unable to join us October 8 the recorded session will be posted in Learn@ISU approximately one week after the live session.

Additional information about all of the Council Seminar Series events can be found here .
Digital update = greater access to Seminar Series events on Learn@ISU!

The Professional and Scientific Council Professional Development Committee has been working for the past year to increase the digital accessibility of our Seminar Series events in Learn@ISU.

As of September 30 all of the FY19 and FY20 events to date have been uploaded to Learn@ISU as MP4 files! This means that if you had difficulty launching the Adobe Connect sessions from Learn@ISU in the past, you should no longer have an issue. These files will play in any video viewing software you have installed on your device!

This conversion, while time consuming, has provided us with an additional opportunity to increase the digital accessibility of our Seminar Series events. We can now transcribe and then caption our event recordings and are thrilled to announce that captions are currently included on the following Council Seminar Series Event Recordings: Empowering Resiliency During Challenging Times (FY19-5), Does Digital Accessibility Have You Feeling Overwhelmed? (FY19-9), and Communicating with Your Supervisor: Developing a Healthy Work Environment (FY19-10).

Additional information about all of the Council Seminar Series events can be found here .
Flu shots for ISU employees available October 7-18

Flu season is just around the corner - in fact, there has already been lab-confirmed flu in Ames.

ISU WellBeing, in connection with Occupational Medicine, will again offer free flu shots for Iowa State University employees October 7-18. No appointment is needed and check-in is a simple electronic process. Be sure to have your nine-digit university ID number when you arrive.

Shots will be administered Monday-Friday, Oct. 7-18, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., 205 Technical and Administrative Services Facility (TASF), 2408 Pammel Drive. If you're a member of ISU WellBeing's Adventure2 program you'll receive points for getting the shot.

Highlighting ISU Staff: Marisa Mendoza, Department of Aerospace Engineering

This month we recognize Marisa Mendoza, Graduate Program Assistant, Aerospace Engineering.

Marisa was nominated by Arlene Grebasch, Administrative Assistant, Aerospace Engineering, who said: "
Marisa has been a consummate professional since her first day at Iowa State. She handles her responsibilities extremely well and still finds time to help out in the Aerospace office. She's been a leader during the transition to Workday, never missing a beat and keeping the faculty up to date as well with the new processes. Marisa also took time to share her knowledge with other graduate assistants. Aerospace is lucky to have Marisa on our team!"

Congratulations, Marisa, and thank you for all you do!

You can nominate a fellow Professional and Scientific employee (or team of employees) for Highlighting ISU Staff! Submit your nominations using this link to tell us about a P&S employee or team doing great work in your area. The form will ask you to tell us about who you are highlighting and why in 100 words or less, and to include a picture of the person, team, or output for which they are being highlighted.

One submission will be regularly included in the newsletter as determined by the P&S Council Awards Committee. Other submissions will be featured on social media with the tag #highlighting ISUstaff, on the P&S Council web page Highlighting ISU Staff, and/or included in future newsletters.
