From the desk of our S.T.E.A.M. Lab This week in STEAM our younger ECE classes explored the shapes and colors seen on Rosh Hashana (New Year) while our older ECE students learned about documenting their observations by drawing what they saw during a pomegranate seed experiment. You can find their drawings hanging on the board outside of the STEAM lab. Our lower school students focused on what it means to make detailed observations using scientific tools and four of their five senses. They rotated through Rosh Hashana-themed centers, made their observations of each center, and practiced writing or drawing what they observed in their STEAM notebooks. They also began learning to differentiate between what makes things living and non-living by looking at objects we use on Rosh Hashana. Eishet Chayil A great time was had by all who attended the joint RMBA and UOS Eishet Chayil Woman of Valor Award celebration honoring Mindy Rosenman Mitzner, who not only significantly contributed to both institutions but also to the greater Houston Jewish Community. Guests enjoyed a delicious brunch and learned all about the impact Mindy has had on our community. Mindy Rosenman Mitzner was presented with the Eishet Chayil Award by the presidents of both institutions, Dr. Barry Diner (RMBA) and Robert Levy (UOS). We wish Mindy the best of luck in her new home in Atlanta. We will miss her dearly!

Life Science While learning about unicellular organisms and the parts of the cell, students in Ms. Goldstein’s 6th grade Life Science classes collected water from the retention pond and looked for single-celled organisms under the microscopes. They then looked at prepared slides of different types of cells from plants and animals to compare the different shapes and organelles that can be found in each type of cell. 100 Cards Students in Ms. Rowan's lower Montessori class had a lesson on card-making so that they could send cards to a WWII Veteran who is turning 100, James South. His birthday is on October 7 and his only wish is to receive 100 birthday cards. The students really enjoyed this activity and learned about the military and veterans.

Maya Projects 8th grade students in Mr. Duke's class are nearing completion on their Maya round calendar construction projects. Over the past two weeks, students have learned how to rip down a sheet of plywood, cut concentric circles with a router and jig, build a pyramid-shaped stand with a jigsaw, mix custom paint colors, and measure out and decorate the surfaces with Maya glyphs and number system. With their soon-to-be-completed round calendar, the students will have the opportunity to study how the Maya measured and recorded time by doing it themselves each day. Say Hello! This week lower school students participated in Say Hello Week in their homerooms. This is a national kindness initiative that teaches students to make a difference with their peers in a simple, fun, and impactful way. The program supports students through fun and meaningful kindness activities such as the one pictured above, which was an activity that helped establish connections.

Tashlich Kindergarten students in Morah Tzippe's Judaic Studies class went to the pond in the Magical Forest to practice Tashlich (Jewish atonement ritual). They pretended to throw away their aveirot (sins) with a sad face and held onto their mitzvot (good deeds) with a happy face. Pomegranate Tasting Students in Morah Sharona's 2nd grade Judaics class learned about Rosh Hashana (New Year) and how we eat pomegranates to increase our mitzvot (good deeds). The class discussed their new year's resolutions while they enjoyed tasting the seeds. Resolutions included: not fighting with siblings, trying to recycle more, and remembering to close the door so that pets don't escape.

Apple Taste Test Students in Morah Miriam's 4th grade Hebrew class enjoyed tasting apples and voting on their favorite one. They also worked on making beautiful Shana Tova (Happy New Year) cards for their friends and families. Spin-a-Number While learning numbers, students in Mrs. Blumberg's Kindergarten class made their own spin-a-number game in Math. Each child colored, cut, and played their own game, and some played together. It became a great competition enjoyed by all.

Sweet as Honey Students in Morah Roza's 4th grade Judaics class had a great time learning about Rosh Hashana and baking honey cakes to celebrate the upcoming holiday. Number Sense 1st grade students in Mrs. Schneider's class worked hard to create a life size number grid. The class will use the number grid throughout the school year to help develop a strong number sense.

They will host the British School on October 3 before traveling to Holy Spirit Episcopal on October 7 and Veritas on October 17. Please check the calendar for practice dates and times.  High School Volleyball The High School Girls will host Oaks Adventist on October 3 and then travel to number 1 state ranked Faith Academy in Bellville on October 7. Please check the calendar for practice dates and times.  Basketball Practices Basketball practice will start for High School Boys on October 16 from 5:45-7:30.  High School Girls, Middle School Girls, and 5th/6th grade boys will start practice after the Holidays.
