Weekly News and Updates for the Week of September 30
Warriors of the Week
Each week through this year we will recognize several of our students through our "Warrior of the Week" award. Students receive this award for displaying effort that goes above-and-beyond our expectations - reflecting their drive to achieve personal and academic growth.

This week's Warriors of the Week are:

6th GRADE
Elizabeth E.
Elizabeth has done a fantastic job of adjusting to the middle school. She has such a positive attitude and works so hard to get her work done. She doesn't hesitate to jump in when a peer needs a little extra help. Elizabeth has already completed 4 focus areas, most even before they were officially assigned. Keep up the good work Elizabeth!

7th GRADE
Lily O.
Lily has already demonstrated that she is a friend to many. She is quick to lend a helping hand or have a kind word for her classmates. She is friendly, polite, and works well with others. Way to go, Lily, for being a great example for us all!

8th GRADE
Mallory A.
Mallory is an exuberant, polite, and conscientious student. She is president of student council, jumped in to help with Start With Hello week, and is patient and caring with all her peers. She is proving to be a strong leader for our Warrior community.

6th Grade Transition
Our MMS Ambassadors finalized their amazing transition work with the 6th grade class during a mentoring meeting on Friday, September 27th!. Our student ambassadors are happy to connect 1:1 with your 6th grader on an ongoing basis if your child identifies that he or she needs ongoing support!
Math Lab
Math help is available before school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 7:45 - 8:30 AM in Room 201 for students in 6-12 grade. Students can receive help on checkpoints, power focus areas, portfolio problems, etc.
Office Hours
Office Hours take place every Tuesday morning from 7:45-8:30 AM and are open to ALL students.
Homework Help
The Fairview Park Library is one of several branches in the Cuyahoga County Public Library system that will be once again offering free, after-school homework help Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30 - 5:30 PM for students in grades K-8. There will be an open house on Wednesday, September 18 from 3:30 - 5:30 PM for families to meet staff and see the space. For more information, click HERE.
Start with Hello Week
Our students really stepped up for Start With Hello Week! Although we were all disappointed in the fact that we couldn't take the drone photo on the field last week, they really impressed us with their pledges and random acts of kindness! Take a look at our pledge tree:
Communities
Every Thursday, during Mentoring, students are able to choose a Community to attend. It's a way for them to meet new teachers and students, as well as spend time doing an activity the enjoy or try something new! Here's the current Middle School Community Menu:
Cell Phone Use
Just a reminder that there should be no student cell phone use throughout the day, unless it's for educational purposes. It is always helpful when parents echo the expectations.
#FoundSomethingCool
Search the Twitter hashtag #FoundSomethingCool for updates on cool activities being done on campus! Look for updates from Mr. Vicha @fhsprincipal , Mr. Honeck @fhswarriors_ap and Mr. McHugh @mrjordanmchugh . There's LOTS of great things happening on campus and we want you to be able to see some of the wonderful things we see every day!

SUMMER READING PROJECT SHOWCASE
The ELA, OA, and social studies classes are working on a cross-curricular unit that incorporates the themes and ideas from the summer reading books and ties them into all of our students' family stories.  Each grade level will be working in their classes with artist Natalie Bauman to create their final products for these classes. Ms. Bauman is a digital artist with the Center for Arts Inspired Learning and we are grateful to use her services through a grant from the Fairview Park Education Foundation. See below for additional information for our Tell Me Your Story Showcase coming up on October 3rd, where the students will show off all their hard work.

You can join online at http://fppta.digitalpto.com/ and go to "Join the PTA" or you can print out a membership form and turn it into the Middle School or High School office stating PTA on the envelope. Thank you and we hope our students and staff have a great year!

Introduction to the PLP
Student Experience
What is project-based learning?
Projects are the foundation of the academic experience. Through project-based learning, students develop cognitive skills - like critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making - that are necessary to be successful in college and beyond. With almost 200 rigorous projects in the Summit Learning curriculum, the final products that students complete are diverse, ranging from simulating historic debates to suggesting changes to school policies to build community.  Students build toward the final product by completing a series of checkpoints with their peers, and receiving feedback from their teacher at each checkpoint. This immersive learning style forces students to not simply learn for a test, but instead, actually develop mastery over the subject matter .

Projects are designed to encourage collaboration. Teachers encourage students to work with their peers on rigorous tasks; they group students flexibly so they can offer workshops for students struggling with specific skills, content and/or habits.

Getting Involved
You don't need to be an expert on the content knowledge covered in your child's projects in order to support them well. The best way you can support your child is to help them reflect, explain their work, and become a better self-directed learner.

You and your students will have access to every project via the Platform

In the Platform, you can see in real-time what project your student is working on, cognitive skills they're building, and learn more about their progress and feedback they've received from their teacher.

FAQs
Q: What is the role of a teacher in the classroom?
A: Teachers are at the heart of every classroom. They use their expertise to help students understand how what they've learned,  and how it applies to the world around them. They focus on helping students develop lifelong cognitive skills such as critical thinking, and they ensure that students are learning to collaborate and build interpersonal habits.
