Welcome to our best weather of the year! Fall is exquisite...warm days, cooler nights, gorgeous sunsets. Aren't we so lucky to live where we live? It is also the best season for planting even in our year-round, never-a-bad-season-to garden climate.

What's New at the Nursery

Hello Everyone!
The October newsletter is here! We are in our fall season even though it still feels like summer during the day, and I absolutely love it. The warm days and the cool nights are ideal for gardening. It is important to take advantage of this weather, especially if you're planning on improving or replanting your garden anytime soon. The main reason being that as we receive our winter rains, plants will have an easier time becoming established. Another reason is that the shorter days coupled with the temperature fluxes (cool nights and warm days) make for less stress on newly planted plants.
Overall this year we've experienced some great weather - summer wasn't too hot (although some very humid days), spring was a little delayed but extended into the summer, and fall is off to a very good start. An interesting fact about this time of the year is that I see more plants available now than in the springtime. Growers finally get caught up with their production and plants are rooted, grown-in and looking nice and healthy. I personally prefer to plant during this time of year because of that very reason.
I am happy to report that I was finally able to make it to Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon last month! It has been a long-time in coming, and my uncle and I were able to embark on a trip this September. I must say, the park was one of the most beautiful places I've gone hiking in my whole life.
The drive up to the park is less than thrilling, but once you're there, it's nothing short of magical. Words cannot describe the feeling once you're surround by the Sierras and begin to see the giant Sequoias all around you. Between the crisp clean air, the smell of the redwood, and the sound of the wildlife (once you get off the main trails), it was almost like a rejuvenating experience for the mind and body. I could go on for days about my trip, but instead I will share some pictures with you. Click below for a link to the photos from my trip.
Plant Talk...
Now for some plant talk! As stated earlier, availability of plants seems to be higher now than even in spring. Ornamental grasses can really break up the monotony of a landscape while adding movement and texture, and they are currently on sale 20% off!Some of my favorites include
Lomandra
(durable grass that hardly needs any maintenance),
Chondropetalum
(small form) also referred to as cape rush,
Aristada
(purple three-awn) a native grass with a showy bloom,
Ficinia thruncata
'Ice crystals' - a newly introduced low growing grass from South Africa that is very attractive and looks good year round, and
Phormiums
provide bold foliage color and are nearly indestructible. Try varieties like 'Black Adder', 'Rainbow warrior', and 'Guardsman' just to name a few.
Check out some of the new varieties of Lomandra we carry, for example 'Lime tough' (pictured below, left), 'Del sol', and 'Shorty' have that lush green appearance and can tolerate sun, part sun, or shade. Also,
we have limited stock in 1 and 5 gallon of
the extremely popular Lomandra 'Plantinum beauty' (variegated foliage, below right). Finally, Lomandra 'Seascape' and 'Pacific sky' prefer mostly sun and have a thinner blue blade that is very attractive.
One of our most popular areas of the nursery is the cactus and succulent section. Recently replenished, you are certain to find something unique to add to your garden or collection. Some of my favorite right now (bolded varieties will be pictured below) include Echeveria 'Velvet ruby', Othonna 'Ruby necklace', Astrophytum myriostigma (inside our greenhouse), Pedilanthus bracteus (gorgeous, almost always flowering!),
Haworthia 'Miami'
(I love the striations on the leaves, we have some in our greenhouse and outside in our shade succulent section), and finally,
Lophocereus schottii monstrose (rare and funky looking- see final picture in this grouping).

Next, Senecio 'Skyscraper' grows upright while having bold blue foliage color, Euphorbia balsamifera is a specimen for any drought resistant garden (we are one of the few nurseries that have them!). Agave tequiliana variegata, Agave xylonocantha (swordfish agave), and Agave gypsophila variegata are rare and in stock with limited availability. (I'm not usually a fan of agaves but these are stun
ning!) That names a few of my favorites and there is always something for everyone.

A quick mention about some new products we are stocking at the nursery: In our fertilizer building, we now offer Down To Earth brand Azomite and Bio-Live fertilizers. Azomite is a mineral product that was formed when an ancient volcano erupted and its ash settled into a prehistoric seabed. The result is a soil amendment that is rich in micronutrients and trace minerals. Great for any garden from edible to cactus and succulents, Azomite will re-mineralize and add micronutrients that improve both soil health and plant health. I personally recommend this product for several uses. I use small amounts of it when I replant my cactus and succulents as they prefer mineral rich soils and Azomite is exactly that when added to cactus mix. Also, when planting fruit trees such as citrus, avocado, and others that require those micro-nutrients to thrive.
Next, Bio-Live (5-4-2) is a blend of marine organism byproducts and a mixture of beneficial fungi and bacteria that create a rich diverse source of nutrients that improve plant and soil health. I love the combination that they are using: the organism byproducts are fish bone meal, fish meal, alfalfa meal, crab meal, shrimp meal, Langbeinite (a mineral containing potassium, magnesium, and sulfur), and kelp meal. This combination in addition to mychorrizal fungi, beneficial bacteria, Saccharomyces, and Trichoderma really enhance the health of your soil especially for fruiting trees and edible gardens.

In addition to classics like plumeria and hibiscus, don't forget philodendron for shady areas in your yard; bright, sunny mandevilla hanging baskets, or gorgeous ginger like this hedychium coronarium (white ginger lily), and some amazing outdoor bromeliads.

 October Gardening Tips
|
|
October is when we see our first true days of autumn. We have already experienced a little rain last weekend and cooler nighttime and morning temperatures. In Southern California, our mild Mediterranean climate makes it possible to plant year-round, but fall is one of the best times of the year to garden: the soil is still warm and the cooler season is soon upon us.
As the temperatures start to cool down, working in the garden becomes even more glorious. October is the peak month for planting cool-season flowers and vegetables. Although you won't be able to enjoy their color until next spring, October is also a choice month for planting perennials. By planting now, they will develop a strong root structure during our cool weather and then burst into glorious color in the spring.
Trees and shrubs:
It's a great month to shop for trees and shrubs as they're showing their true colors. Planting can take place now and over the next several months, letting strong healthy roots develop over the winter.

Northern Cardinals
Anyone who has lived in the Midwest or East Coast has most likely seen a Northern Cardinal.
Every greeting card company in North America must use this bird's picture against a backdrop of
snow during the Christmas season. And why not? It's one of those birds that even if you're not a bird watcher
you'll for sure notice it.
Northern Cardinals can be found across the Eastern U.S. from lower Canada south to the Gulf Coast and
west to Arizona and parts of southern California. The Cardinals range has expanded dramatically since 1886 when
it was rarely seen north of the Ohio river. Cardinals are permanent residents throughout their range and
do not migrate.
The male is a bright red with a pointed crest on the top of his head. The female is mostly buff brown in color with some
red on her head, wings and tail. Both have small black masks on their faces that surround the bill and eyes. Cardinals
are about 8 to 9 in. long.
Look for Northern Cardinals in inhabited areas such as backyards, parks, woodpiles, and shrubby forest edges.
Cardinals nest in dense tangles of shrubs and vines. The adults' food consist of insects, spiders, wild fruits, berries,
grains, and weed seeds. Two types of seed they love are Black Oil Sunflower and Safflower. Cardinals' nesting
season last from March to August. They usually raise two to three broods a year.
The Cardinal ranks number one with seven states naming it their official bird. The States are: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky,
North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. Cardinals live up to 15 years.
