ORGANIZATIONAL PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

This month's Organizational Partner Spotlight is on the social media helpline iCanHelpline.orgThe idea grew out of Anne Collier's nearly 20 years' work in youth online safety. She knew, from following the research and her work on three national task forces, that schools were struggling with how to deal with cyberbullying and other problems students face in digital media. She also knew from her work with educators and risk prevention experts that though there are many resources available to schools on the prevention side of online risk, there was very little on the intervention side of the problem. That's why  iCanHelpline.org  was created. Click here to read the full article and to learn more about iCanHelpline.org.

PROJECTS
Created Equal Project Enters Second Year

The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) is proud to announce that the Created Equal: Image, Sound, and Story project enters its second year of implementation this spring. Growing from two schools in Brooklyn to four, this collaborative initiative between the JBFC and the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) provides an engaging look at the civil rights movement. Expanding on traditional literacy instruction to include viewing and analyzing media, Created Equal: Image, Sound, and Story empowers students as historians, storytellers, media makers, and social activists as they grow to understand how the past and the present are connected, shaped, and shared. During professional development sessions with the JBFC, participating teachers put themselves in the role of their students by completing all components of each of the curriculum's three units of study: photographing a campaign about school segregation, writing a protest song, and producing a short documentary film. These partner educators will go on to implement the curriculum in their classrooms in April, and cap off the experience with a presentation of the students' short documentary films at BHS in early June. Funding for this initiative is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

RESOURCES

We the Voters: 20 Films for the People

We the Voters: 20 Films for the People is an anthology of short films with accompanying educational materials developed by PBS Education. With local elections coming up around the nation, it's the perfect time for educators to incorporate some of these FREE media resources into your curricula and focus on the people and issues your community could be voting on in the coming months. Email [email protected] for more information about free programming for your school or community group including student screenings, professional development workshops, webinars for educators, and more.

Video Series: Leading a Media Decoding

There are many stories about the problems in education, but unfortunately fewer about solutions. Teachers are busy. Engaging students is difficult. Educators have to increasingly teach to the test and meet state standards to prepare students for college and the workplace. Many sites on the Internet provide data, resources, and information - but few show you how to use them.  To help bridge this gap, Project Look Sharp at Ithaca College has developed a series of videos   to help K-12 educators lead discussions based on a Constructivist Media Decoding philosophy. These 5-10 minute long videos show how teachers can engage all students by employing objective-based questioning strategies to deconstruct carefully chosen media documents.

Connect The Dots shows you how your data is connected by analyzing it as a network. Analyzing the connections between the "dots" in your data is a fundamentally different approach to understanding it. This tool shows you a network diagram to reveal those links, and gives you a high level report about what your network looks like.  DataBasic is a suite of free easy-to-use web tools for beginners that introduce concepts of working with data. These simple tools make it easy to work with data in fun ways, so you can learn how to find great stories to tell.
