Helping the Hurting and the Homeless in the Name of Jesus Christ!

October 2019
  Greetings!

“. . . for apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5b

Jesus said these words just hours before the disciples were to face the greatest trial of their lives. All hope, it appeared, was about to be lost, the Savior of the world was about to be hung on a tree (Galatians 3:13). When someone knows they are going to die they choose their words very carefully, the words Jesus chose to leave the disciples with are of utmost importance.  After three years of the most intense discipleship imaginable, Jesus tells them “Apart from me you can do nothing”.

The problems we face every day at the rescue mission constantly remind us of this humbling truth.  Our only hope is Jesus.  As we counsel, teach, and proclaim Christ to our guests, disciples, and inmates we face scenarios, problems, and uncover wounds that are beyond us to untangle, solve, and heal.  We need Jesus.  When fluctuating donations, and unexpected expenses due to problems with an old building, broken down vehicles, high utility bills, add to the constant financial needs of running two mission facilities with a combined fifty beds.  We need Jesus.

For the disciples this teaching was especially troubling because shortly after this Jesus was arrested, questioned, beaten, mocked, and crucified between two criminals and buried in a tomb. All seemed lost, but that could not have been farther from the truth. On the third day, Jesus rose from the grave having conquered sin and death. He then ascended to heaven and sat down at the right hand of the Father and ever lives to make intercession for us (Hebrew 7:25).  Apart from Him, we can do nothing and praise God, he has promised to never leave us nor forsake us!  (Hebrews 13:5)

“The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah” Psalm 46:11

I would like to give you a brief update on our financial position.  Things are currently very tight and we are trusting God to provide for payroll. Would you please pray with us? As stewards of God’s money, we have kept our expenses down roughly $12,000 below budget but currently still need an additional $10,000 to cover expenses.  We praise God for the reminder that we need Jesus and for the opportunity to trust Him.   Please pray.

Titus 2:2
Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled,
sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.

This verse is directed toward older men. However, these are qualities we should all pursue as we grow in maturity. I was particularly interested in the words “sober minded”. This refers to being circumspect which carries the idea of being wary, watchful, and cautious.

This circumspect mind is essential for women in our Healing Heart program to learn early-on. Their spiritual health and perhaps their very life depend upon it.

When you consider the Mission in your prayers, please pray for our program participants and graduates that they will learn to be “sober-minded” and live the abundant life Jesus spoke of.

John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.
I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Would You Please Consider Volunteering at the Columbus and Living Water Rescue Missions?

2 Corinthians 9:6-7a "Whosoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to to give ....

With busy lives it can be hard to find time to volunteer, however the benefits of volunteering can be enormous for you, your family, and the rescue missions in Columbus & York. We are currently in need of evening chapel leaders - 1/2 hour a month or weekly blesses us greatly. We also have some nights available on our calendar to bring in an evening meal. On occasion we need people to drive guests to an appointment or to a job interview. We can always use painters and fixer-uppers. Finally, there is a need for translators for our Spanish speaking guests.

If you would like to be blessed and also be a blessing to others, please call Karen in Columbus 402-563-1096 or LaVerna in York 402-362-0127.

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Creator God, for daily bread
and all who work
to bring your harvest home
we bring our thanks today.

Forgive our ingratitude
we who have so much
yet waste what you have given.

For those whose harvest is poor,
whose crops have withered,
water tainted, children starve,
help those who bring relief
and bestow on us
an unaccustomed generosity,
that all might share from your garden
and all might sing your praise.

Creator God, provider of all
we bring our thanks today.
Amen.
