Fresh Air Fitness 
All are welcome to join us for the conclusion of Fresh Air Fitness, a health and wellness series in the Central Park Amphitheater (121 Park Avenue). It's a chance to take your wellness routine to the great outdoors and get to know a few Swarthmore-based providers. 

Tuesday, October 1 from 6-7 pm
Fear is a Liar! On October 1, we welcome Sam Nardi of The Ready Room - Swarthmore. This very popular group fitness program  teaches the basic standards, progressions, and regressions of strength and conditioning.  The program is for anyone ages 12 to 80 years young looking to lose body fat, get stronger and more conditioned for life. Everyone goes at their pace, works at their fitness level, and everyone supports everyone! 

Participants should wear athletic attire and shoes, and bring a water bottle, yoga mat, and a friend! 

Wednesday, October 2 from 6-7 pm
On October 2, we're excited to welcome Team Sun Wellness, who will be presenting The Self-Care Mindset: Seated Meditation and Mindful Movement for All Levels.

We invite you to "put on your own oxygen mask first!" With the breath as the key to our self-care toolkit, we'll be exploring simple tools to manage stress, become more present, and foster self-acceptance. These include seated breath awareness and breath control exercises, breath-connected movement exercises, and a guided mindfulness meditation to finish it off. Practicing these tools helps develop a mindset that encourages self-care. No experience in meditation or yoga needed.

Bring a cushion to sit on, a blanket for your lap if we're outside, and an open mind. All ages and levels of experience welcome. Donation-based - pay what you can. In case of inclement weather, the session will move inside Borough Hall.

Film Screening: "1971"
Swarthmore United Methodist Church - 129 Park Avenue, 7:30 pm 
The Swarthmore United Methodist Church is inviting the community to a free showing of the 2015 movie "1971" on First Friday starting at 7:30 pm. The films tells the story of a notorious 1971 activist burglary of an FBI office that led to the Bureau's numerous abuses against dissidents being exposed. All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. 
ANNA Crusis Women's Choir
Central Park Amphitheater - 121 Park Avenue, 7-8 pm 
The Swarthmore Public Library is proud to welcome the  ANNA Crusis Women's Choir, the longest-running feminist women's choir i n the United States. Founded in 1975,  ANNA is a widely recognized vocal ensemble in Philadelphia, with 80+ singers, committed to musical excellence and promoting social change. Their music repertoire reflects the rich spectrum of human lives and struggles, shedding light on issues facing immigrants and refugees, young people, women, the LGBTQ+ community, and others. Join us for this free performance on First Friday f rom 7-8 pm. 


Swarthmore Horticultural Society's Strolling Cocktail Party 
Saturday, October 5 from 5-7 pm 
Please join us as we celebrate our members by visiting our beautiful downtown gardens which will be decorated with the work of local artists! Start at Gallery on Park, 104 Park Avenue, to pick up a map of the walk, along with artist bios. Then stroll the downtown gardens filled with sculpture by local artists and watch Plein Air painters at work before meeting back at Central Park at 6 pm for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

This event is free for SHS members; non-members are welcome to join for the yearly $20 membership fee.
Swarthmore College's Print Services Now Open to the Community
Consider using Print Services at Swarthmore College for your copying needs. Print Services prices are lower than local copy centers such as Fed Ex/Kinko and Staples. Print services can do black and white or color copies, flyers, posters, banners, lamination, booklets with tape and spiral bindings, and mailings.  Print Services information and price list is online at   https://www.swarthmore.edu/print-services .

Print Services is managed by Tarsia Duff and is open 8:30 am to 1 pm, Monday through Friday. Projects can be dropped off in person at 506 Field House Lane, emailed to printservices@swarthmore.edu, or submitted via the website submission form. Intro to Reformer Series

Learn the fundamental exercises of Pilates Reformer while discussing modifications, equipment safety and set-up. You'll get a free mini workout for your home practice! Sessions are in a small group setting. Appropriate clients should not suffer from severe pain or injury. You are registering for 6 classes in 6 weeks; 1x per week. Space is limited. Drop-in rates are not available. $150.

Bones and Balance
Six-week series on  Thursdays 10-11 am
October 3 - November 14 (no class on November 7)
This class is designed to target the individual who has experienced bone loss and/or is interested in preventing falls. Using the Pilates principles, each session will include movements to enhance awareness, posture, leg strength, and balance. The group will be guided in both seated and standing positions and ending with a short meditation to center and embrace the work. Register for all 6 weeks. $90.

October Workshop at Gallery on Park
Gallery on park will be hosting a workshop by Swarthmore native, Sasha Prood. Sasha will be teaching step by step marker techniques utilizing her latest published book,  Marker Workshop: Learn to Ink in 50 Experiments

This wonderful workshop will take place on Thursday, October 24 from 5-8 pm. The fee is $75 which includes Sasha's new book (valued at $24.99) and all supplies. Just show up and enjoy!

T'ai Chi Chih with Susan Corey
An 8-week series on Mondays at 4 pm in October and November.
T'ai Chi Chih is a moving meditation consisting of nineteen non-strenuous, easily learned movements taught over an 8-week session. These natural and gentle movements are done slowly, smoothly, and softly; the focus is on developing intrinsic energy and wellness. Rather than emphasizing martial arts principles, T'ai Chi Chih concentrates on focusing, balancing, and circulating the chi, i.e. energy. This practice does not require fitness or coordination and can be done by young adults and retirees alike.  Class size is limited. "Some Call Me Witch" - A Talk by Kerry Doyle

Kerry Doyle will speak on popular depictions of witches in early modern England. This talk will broaden and reconsider the idea by looking at other dramatic and printed depictions of witchcraft during the early modern period, including some that questioned its specific cultural impact and even its very existence. A historical lecture with seasonal resonance.

History of European Art

A History of European Art is your gateway to this visually stunning story. In 48 beautifully illustrated lectures, you will encounter all the landmarks you would expect to find in a comprehensive survey of Western art since the Middle Ages. Works such as Giotto's Arena Chapel, Van Eyck's Ghent Altarpiece, Leonardo's The Last Supper, Michelangelo's David, Vermeer's View of Delft, Van Gogh's The Starry Night, Picasso's Guernica, and hundreds more.  Refreshments will be served.
Classical Music Concert for the Community
Swarthmore United Methodist Church is presenting a special musical event for the congregation and the entire community on Sunday, October 27 at 5 pm in the church sanctuary. Flutist Frances Tate, from the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, is a Swarthmore resident and an active teacher and performer in the Philadelphia area. She will play selections by Mozart, Copland, and Böhm. Also on the program are a very compelling dramatic tenor Yungbae Yang, music director at Emmanuel Church in Philadelphia, and a beautiful lyric coloratura soprano Eunmi Shin, soloist at Emmanuel Church. Both have extensive opera credits on their resumes. They will sing various opera selections by Cilea, Händel, Verdi, and more! The music director at Swarthmore United Methodist Church and a wonderfully talented pianist YunJoung Park will accompany these three guests and perform a piano piece by Chopin.

There is no charge for the concert, but a free will offering will be taken. A reception of light refreshments will follow, and childcare is provided. Please plan to attend this very special event and encourage your friends and neighbors as well.
