Teaching Philosophy at IIT Gandhinagar

Prof. Sudhir K Jain (Civil,79)
Director, IIT Gandhinagar
The rapid pace of change in today's world requires constant learning and reinvention. I recall when I entered Roorkee in 1975, a mechanical device known as "slide rule" was the first thing we had to master. By the time we graduated four years later, none of us were using the slide rule, as we all had acquired electronic calculators. The technology and the society are changing much faster today than they did 40 years back, and the students of today will see far more rapid changes in their professional life than what I did. In fact, the only constant today is change, and to keep pace with it we must forever learn and relearn. Therefore, mastery of subject is no longer all that important; learning to learn is. The technical knowledge that our students acquire over say four years starts to become obsolete almost as soon as they step out of college. Today information is handily available to us at the click of a mouse or on our smartphones. To be effective in life and in any leadership responsibility, students must develop the discipline of curiosity and lifelong learning.
The curriculum at IIT Gandhinagar is designed around the proposition not of mastering content, but the process, so our students can develop ways of thinking and learning. We have determined that the soft skills of creativity, written and oral communication, teamwork, values and ethics are critical to professional growth and success and we have invested heavily in cultivating them in our student body. For this reason, the IITGN curriculum places a heavy emphasis on humanities courses and we have implemented a 5-week immersion Foundation Program for all incoming undergraduates centered around five themes: physical fitness, leadership and team work, creativity, values and ethics, and societal concerns and sensitivity. Our extra-curricular programs likewise underscore these skills. For example, in our Explorers Fellowship, we provide our students a sum of Rs 38,000 so as to travel the length and breadth of India over six weeks, that is, Rs 900 per day to cover their travels, their boarding and lodging, and their miscellaneous out-of-pocket expenses. They are not allowed to travel by aircrafts or by air-conditioned train coaches in the summer months and must not supplement the budget from their parents. The intent is for our students to develop a deeper appreciation of the diversity and reality of India by traveling and living like most Indians do.
IITGN graduated first batch of students in 2012 and our graduates have done exceedingly well in higher education, industry and entrepreneurship. Feedback from our alumni, formal and informal, clearly reaffirms our philosophy that " learning to learn " is really what matters to enable our graduates keep abreast of the state of the art in their field. And the soft skills in creativity, communication, leadership, values and ethics, will be the drivers of their professional growth.

Testimonial from Samarth Gubrele:
I was selected under the NTU India Connect Program for an internship at NTU Singapore under
Prof. Xie Ming,   School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

My project "OSMind: An Analytical Tool for Robotics",  comprised of development of an analytical software for visualization, simulation, and image processing using the Robotics Operating System (ROS).

The experience was truly enlightening. I learned a lot about the software aspects of robotics, and was very happy to see the practical applications of my projects. My supervisor was very helpful, motivating, and inspired me to maximize my productivity and produce the best results. I along with my professor are planning to write a research paper soon.

I was fortunate to meet several IIT alums at the PAN IIT Alumni meet in Singapore. I was also lucky to meet Mr. Sanjeev Agarwal, IIT R 1981 batch and a major donor to IIT Roorkee Heritage Foundation. It is alum donors like him that are making dreams come true for students like me through the IITRHF platform.

Overall, this was my best internship experience till now, and I am thankful and indebted to IITRHF for their support.

ENCORE Campus Awards

The Class of 1989 setup Encore Awards at IITR in 2015 after their Silver Jubilee celebration. A record 107 students from Class of 1989 joined hands to raise over INR 43 Lakh, and set up scholarships to recognize all round excellence, encourage women in science and technology, and to help needy and meritorious students.

The Encore awards include (a) O verall excellence award for INR 50,000 (given to 2 or 3 students), and (b) A merit-cum-means award for INR 30,000 (given to 5 or 6 students).

Since these awards were established, they have become the most coveted awards at IITR campus. One of the reasons for the success of the award has been the rigorous, fair and transparent evaluation of applicants, including an in-person interview by Class of 1989 who travels to IITR specifically for this.
