Board of Supervisors Meeting Highlights - October 2
The 2020 budget planning sessions start Monday, October 7 at 6:00 p.m. at the Municipal Building. A complete list of planning sessions is posted on the township website and Facebook page. All meetings are open to the public. Please note that the November 6 Board of Supervisors meeting has been changed to 6:00 p.m. to accommodate a budget planning session that will occur immediately following that meeting.

All Moon Township offices will be closed on Thursday, October 17 for an employee training event.

New Truck for Public Works 
Supervisors recognized Raleigh Rickerd for earning the rank of Eagle Scout in  the Boy Scouts of America. As a member of Troop 198, Raleigh earned 31 merit badges and accumulated more than 100 combined service hours while serving in numerous troop leadership roles. For his Eagle Scout project, Raleigh built an arbor trellis for the Fern Hollow Nature Center with a carved wooden "Welcome Friends" sign that marks the entryway to a children's outdoor play area.


The Board of Supervisors regular public meeting is held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building. Watch live on M AG-TV, Comcast channel 18 or Verizon channel 37. MTMA Water Main Flushing

Moon Township Municipal Authority personnel are flushing water mains and testing and inspecting fire hydrants nightly, Sunday through Friday for four weeks through October 25. Flushing is scheduled between the hours of 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Customers may notice low water pressure and water discoloration. It is recommended to check water before using. Any discoloration will normally clear in a short time.
Property Tax Information
The Moon Township Property Tax Office is collecting the 10 percent penalty amount of the Moon Township property tax statements until December 31. To pay this tax online, visit our website at moontaxoffice.us .

The office is also collecting the FACE amount of the Moon Area School District property tax until October 31. The 10 percent penalty amount begins November 1 and runs until December 31.  For those in the installment plan, we are collecting the third installment until October 31. The final installment is due no later than November 30.

The office is now following the fall/winter office hours as follows:

     Monday, Wednesday, Friday - 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
     Tuesday, Thursday - 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Fall Yard Waste Collection

Moon Township's Public Works Department offers the following services to assist residents with fall yard waste disposal. As a reminder, there will be no pickups on November 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Please note that areas west of University Boulevard will be picked up either on Thursday or Friday. Residents in these areas should have materials out for collection by 8 a.m. Thursday.

Curbside Leaf Pickup

The schedule follows residents' regular garbage collection. Place leaves at the curb by 8 a.m. on pickup day. Please use biodegradable paper bags. Loose leaves and leaves in plastic bags or boxes will not be picked up.

Curbside Tree Branch Pickup

The schedule follows residents' regular garbage collection. Place branches at the curb by 8 a.m. on pickup day. Branches should not exceed six feet in length and four inches in diameter and should not be bundled or tied.

Compost Dropoff/Pickup

Downes Fire Station
Residents may drop off yard waste to be composted, including branches, leaves and plant matter. Please use biodegradable bags. Branches should not exceed six feet in length and four inches in diameter and should not be bundled or tied. This dropoff is for yard waste only. Trash or other materials are not permitted. The composting program provides free mulch and compost to residents. Bring your own containers and take as much as you need. The Downes Fire Station is located at the intersection of Beaver Grade Road and Ewing Road. Please notify Public Works prior to your arrival by calling 412.262.1700 .
 
Electronics Recycling Day

Moon Township's Environmental Advisory Council hosts electronics recycling days in partnership with JVS Environmental. These events collect electronic items only, including printers, copiers, computers, laptops and televisions. Only one TV per vehicle will be accepted. Other items, such as appliances containing FREON and fluorescent lighting, will be collected for a fee. Recycling collections are open to Moon Township residents only. Proper ID is required.
 
Walk the Moon Trail Event

Moon Park, Olson Park and Robin Hill Park

Get out and explore the trails! Enjoy a guided nature walk at one of Moon Township's three parks and take home some giveaway items. This is a free, family-friendly event hosted in partnership with Hollow Oak Land Trust .
 
Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company Open House

Public Safety Building

The Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company is hosting a community open house during National Fire Prevention Week. All residents are invited and encouraged to attend. Get an up-close look at the fire trucks and the fire station. Learn about fire safety and prevention, how to operate a fire extinguisher, and creating a fire escape plan. The event is at the public safety building located at 1000 Beaver Grade Road. This is a great opportunity to thank your volunteer firefighters or to learn more about becoming a volunteer.

Sportsmen's Bash Tickets on Sale
Tickets are now on sale for the annual  Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company Sportsmen's Bash to be held on Saturday, April 25, 2020.  Tickets, which include food and refreshments, are available for a $30 donation. Contact a fireman, visit one of the fire stations on Mondays at 7:00 p.m. or swing by the open house on October 12 to obtain a ticket.
Halloween Spooktacular

Trick-or-Treat

Dust off the decorations, get ready to carve your pumpkins and be sure to have plenty of candy ready to hand out during the annual Trick-or-Treat night! Please be careful when traveling around the township. The Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company will be driving through neighborhoods to help keep everyone safe.
Prescription Drug Take Back Day

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for abuse of medications.

The program addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue and provides an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

Moon Township residents may drop off unwanted and expired prescription drugs year round in the collection box located in the police station lobby at 1000 Beaver Grade Road.
Veterans Day Pancake Breakfast

Moon Township Parks and Recreation will be honoring local veterans with a FREE pancake breakfast as our way to say THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE! Please RSVP by calling 412.262.1703. The breakfast is free to veterans and one guest.

Glass Recycling Event

Due to the positive response from the previous glass recycling event, Moon Township and Pennsylvania Resource Council (PRC) have planned another event in November. All colors of glass bottles, jars and jugs from the public will be accepted at no cost. Caps, lids and labels are acceptable. Please empty all containers. Please note that window glass, drinking glasses, stemware, dishware, ceramics, mirrors, light bulbs and TVs will not be accepted. For more information on other PRC collection events, please visit the PRC website.
Waste Management At Your Door Recycling Program

Waste Management offers a residential  curbside special materials pickup.  The  "At Your Door Special Collection" program allows most Moon Township residents to easily and safely dispose of household materials.  There are three ways to schedule a collection:

After scheduling your collection date and time, a Waste Management representative will provide you with information and instructions for preparing your collection. Moon Township Senior Connection 
Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Tapestry Senior Living

The Moon Township Senior Connection program has moved to Tapestry Senior Living (the former Embassy Suites).  Members are welcome to stop in during these hours to play cards and board games, build puzzles, use the computer lab, watch TV or just hang out and enjoy each other's company. The center has a pool table and electronic darts and open swim times will start soon. Scheduled classes include senior fitness activities, ballroom dancing, crafts, brain games and a movie of the week. There will also be special events and bus trips. A schedule of daily activities is posted at the center.

The Senior Connection is open to anyone aged 55 and older. The group welcomes members from all communities, not just Moon Township. It's free to join, so stop by the office anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday to sign up. The Senior Connection is located at Tapestry Senior Living at 550 Cherrington Parkway, Moon Township, PA 15108.
 
Senior Connection Bus Trip: Meadows Casino

Bus departs Senior Connection Center at 11:00 a.m.
Bus returns around 6:00 p.m.

The Senior Connection is hosting a bus trip to the Meadows Casino and Racetrack. The cost is $35 per person, and everyone with a photo ID will receive a $25 slot bonus. For more details or to purchase a ticket, please call 412-262-1703. Please register by Thursday, October 31.
