“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”

As I take the helm of Habitat CFC, I am keenly aware of all the leaders, Board members, staff, volunteers, donors and families who came before me and helped to shape Habitat Coastal Fairfield County into an exceptional affiliate. Please accept my gratitude for the role you have played in that construction. All that will be accomplished under my leadership is inextricably linked to everything that has come before me.
In the same way, as Seneca reminds us, beginnings and endings are linked. And with them often comes a mix of emotions—excitement, fear, sadness, joy—as the beginnings and endings involve change. I welcome and am humbled by the opportunity to traverse this terrain with you as we seek to create more new beginnings for families, who through owning a decent and affordable home, create strength and stability for their family.
During my first few weeks here, I have been blessed to participate in three closings. Closings tend to be a swarm of signing documents and receiving plain spoken explanation of the legal meaning of them. It can be easy to forget the magnitude of what this moment means for the new homeowner family. When I take a moment though, I notice the joy on Maria’s face as a smile washes over it, or the beauty of Fatouma’s Hijab that signals the importance she placed on this moment or the many questions she asked to be clear about what she was signing, or the tear that slipped down Martha’s face as she began signing her mortgage documents.
This new beginning for the families with whom we partner will always be worth the journey we take to get there.
I hope to meet many of you at our Open House on Thursday, October 24.
With gratitude,
Cathy Collins, PhD
Chief Executive Officer, Habitat CFC
