NEW OFFICE MANAGER - JESSICA COONS

{As previously announced, office manager, Allison Caldwell, is moving with her family to Florida because of a job change for her husband.  We send her off with much appreciation and love.}

The UMCE Staff Parish Relations Team is happy to announce that Jessica Coons has accepted the role of serving as our church office manager.  She is currently beginning her transition into this role, and will be training alongside Allison over the next week.  Jessica will formally begin as office manager on Monday, October 7, as Allison's last day with us is Friday, October 4.

During the interview process, Jessica's outgoing personality and ability to prioritize important tasks stood out.  She brings a wealth of experience to this position, and we are truly lucky to have her join our staff.   In addition, Jessica already knows our church well, as she has a child in the Great Escape preschool.

If you have any questions about this transition, please don't hesitate to reach out to Pastor Deb or me.

2019 PURA VIDA MINISTRIES ANNUAL GALA
Friday, November 1st at 6:00 pm

Pura Vida Ministries will hold a Benefit Dinner and Celebration on Friday, November 1st at the Lakewood Country Club in Lakewood, Colorado. The gathering will provide an opportunity to join in the celebration of the continued success of Pura Vida's Guatemala ministries.

The evening includes a reception at 6:00pm, dinner at 7:30pm, and a program presentation on Pura Vida's mission. There will also be a silent auction and time to mingle with others who've participated in Pura Vida's success.

Pura Vida Ministries is currently providing scholarships for over 350 children in several rural Guatemalan villages. Many of these students wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to attend school. A significant number of these scholarship students are sponsored by families from this church.  Many of these students, who began sponsorship in primary school, are now enrolled at university. Pura Vida is extremely grateful for your support.

Work teams have provided many news homes and school classrooms for needy communities in Guatemala.  Our English Camp has just completed it's 6th year teaching English skills to students in communities near Chichicastenango.  Your church has been instrumental in the success via sponsorships, mission trips and financial & prayer support throughout Pura Vida's history.

Please join us November 1st to celebrate our shared accomplishments and hear more about plans for the future of Pura Vida ministries.

For more details about the event and to order tickets, go to  http://www.puravida.org/dinner , or Nickie Rounds at  [email protected]  or  (303)-632-8191.

Speaking the Truth in Love

Jesus called his disciples to the impossible: "Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; speak well of those who speak evil of you; pray for those who persecute you." (Lk 6)   This is the impossible love that Jesus comes to announce in order that humanity work towards unity. This way of forgiveness and reconciliation, of acceptance of people who are different, is meant to shake all the foundations of groups and societies closed in upon themselves.

Perhaps the most essential characteristic of our spiritual life is expressed in offering one another unconditional acceptance as persons. This does not mean accepting destructive behavior, but learning to communicate acceptance of the other as a person with no strings attached. Unconditional love is an expression of God's love. To love in God's way involves generous self-giving. A healthy congregation or family life requires a great deal of give and take - the capacity for compromise, yielding to others, and graciously being yielded to. We find it hard to give ourselves freely to others when we are judging them. I speak of judgment here in the sense of condemnation rather than of discernment.

Paul calls the spiritual art of discernment "speaking the truth in love" (Eph 4:15). It is a demanding skill, beginning with the discipline of discerning what is true. Then following with the capacity both to offer authentic appreciation when fitting, and to confront gently yet firmly when needed. The deceptively simple phrase "speaking the truth in love" indicates that the SPIRIT in which one speaks truth is as important as the truth one speaks.

Blessings,
Pastor Deb
