Houston Lutheran Campus Ministries is Changing Its Name and Website!
Our wonderful Houston campus ministry that serves the campuses of Rice University and the University of Houston has updated its name to Sanctuary, and has a new website to go with it. 

Check out the new website, and while you are there, watch the video they made all about why campus ministry matters, together with our other fabulous campus ministry based at A&M and Blinn College, Treehouse. And don't forget - if you have students starting at any of these schools, and haven't connected them with campus ministries, make sure to do so now!
Installation of Sue Briner as Bishop of Southwestern Texas Synod
The Southwestern Texas Synod of the ELCA invites you to attend a Service of Holy Communion and installation of The Rev. Susan Jennifer Briner as Bishop of the Southwestern Texas Synod by Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton.

Saturday, September 1, 2pm

A reception will follow the service. Pastors, deacons and synodically authorized ministers are invited to vest and process. The liturgical color is red.  Those participating in the procession are requested  to arrive at the church by 1pm.  RSVP so they can prepare accordingly.


Ordination and Installation of Ariel Williams at Living Word, Katy
Ariel Williams has been called to Living Word Lutheran Church in Katy as the new associate pastor. A Service of Ordination and Installation for Ariel is scheduled for Sunday September 16th at 4pm.

Clergy is inviting to robe. Color of the day is red.

Community of Hope Training
For those who wish to serve the community in a unique and compassionate way, Kinsmen Lutheran Church offers training through their Community of Hope ministry.
 
As a designated center for Community of Hope International, Kinsmen trains lay people to serve in pastoral care at hospitals, assisted living centers, or anywhere they feel called. Over the course of 14 weeks, the training guides participants through the tenants of Benedictine Spirituality-which center around balance, humility, and hospitality-as well as teaching practical lessons on how to minister to others.
 
The next Community of Hope training will begin Tuesday, August 21 and continues through November 27 (no class the week of Thanksgiving). Training is open to the community, and the course fee is just $50. An application form is due two weeks prior to the start of class and may be obtained by emailing Lynnae Schatz or calling at 281.444.3127, ext. 43.
Installation of Eric Youngdahl at House of Prayer, Houston
Pastor Eric Youngdahl, who has begun his ministry as senior pastor at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, will be installed on Sunday, August 26, at 4:00pm

Previously, Pastor Eric served as Associate Pastor of House of Prayer, Associate Pastor of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN, and as Interim Pastor at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bay City, TX. Joining Pastor Eric in his ministry is his wife, Lindsay, and three children, son Ford, daughter Landry, and son Miller. Come and celebrate with us the installation of Pastor Eric on August 26. A reception will follow the installation service.

Sunday Evening Conversation on Sustainability
In August, we welcome Richard Johnson, Director of Sustainability for Rice University for our Sunday Evening Conversation on Creation on August 26, 6pm

He has been working on sustainability initiatives at Rice since 2004. Their efforts to "green" the campus include such areas as food, transportation, green cleaning, grounds, water, recycling, and buildings. Come find out what you can learn from Rice's work on sustainability over the past 14 years.

Lutherhill 12th Annual S'mores & Champagne Gala

Bright Stars of Bethlehem Presents The Jerusalem Conference
Bright Stars of Bethlehem partners to grow hope in Palestine by connecting people in the United States through awareness-raising and fund-raising, to these ministry efforts in the Holy Land. They are hosting a n event on Thursday, October 11 - Jerusalem: What makes for peace? This is part of the larger Room for Hope Palestinian Festival.
Together, we will identify concrete steps and goals towards advancing the vision of an inclusive, diverse, and equitable Jerusalem.

Order ELCA World Hunger Advent Resources
We know school just started for most of you, but it is already time to start thinking about Advent. ELCA World Hunger resources are a wonderful way to prepare for and celebrate Christmas in the Advent season.

There is a new Advent study, updated Good Gifts catalog selections, Good Gifts ornaments for the tree that both represent and benefit the many ways the ELCA is working to combat hunger, an Advent calendar and a bulletin insert. However you practice Advent, there are wonderful resources available for congregations, individuals and families.

The ELCA Foundation is searching for a Director of Gift Planning.
 
There are two key responsibilities for this leadership position:
  • Through the direct supervision of a national staff of about 20 regional gift planners (coaching and managing), lead and manage a robust fund-raising program to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective donors of current and planned gifts;
  • Manage the business relationships with ministry partner organizations through on-site visits.
 
This position is located in Chicago and reports to the Executive Vice President of the Foundation. It requires about 30% travel, visiting regional gift planners, donors, and ministry partnerships.

Reporting to the presiding bishop , this position requires about 25% travel. It is located in Chicago.
