Milpitas High School students named as semifinalists in 2020 National Merit Scholar program
|
Based on the results from the Preliminary SAT exam, 8 Milpitas High School students were named Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship program.
These 8 students --
Vanessa H. Cho, Dania Kirmani, Alden T. Lau, Tran N. Le, Melanie Lin, Ayushi Malhotra, Neval Mulaomerovic, and Charles Snead -- were all recognized for their achievement at the Sept. 24 meeting.
In February, the students will be notified, if they're chosen to advance and become Finalists, which would make them eligible to receive scholarships.

Pair of MHS seniors recognized for working with Rotary Club on Leadership Development
|
|
Nhu Hao Nguyen and Rishi Donapati, Rotarian Interactors from Milpitas High, spent a weekend doing Leadership Training with the Milpitas Rotary Club.
"Rotarians are all about service, and we greatly appreciate you taking the time to learn more," said Superintendent Cheryl Jordan to the two students.

Rancho teacher, paraprofessional earn #WEareMUSDChampion honors

Ken Chiu, a math teacher at Rancho Middle School, was thrilled to be selected as the September 2019 #WEareMUSDChampion for the certificated staff, while Tamara Robertson, a paraprofessional at Rancho, was just as delighted to be chosen from the classified staff.

Kevin Slavin introduced as new Assistant Principal at Russell
|

Kevin Slavin has been hired as Russell Middle School’s new assistant principal.
Superintendent Cheryl Jordan introduced him at the September 24 board meeting. "He comes from a very unique background, he’s humble, he has vision…And he has that kind of charismatic energy that some of us strive to achieve but never seem to be able to…But most importantly, he cares about kids and about making a difference in the lives of all our families,” said Jordan.
Slavin began his career working with youth at the YMCA, where he started out as an Afterschool Leader and worked his way up to an Afterschool Director; from there, he ended up running his own program. After that, he transitioned to become a teacher in the Alum Rock School District; he started out teaching elementary school students, and then taught middle school.
"Seeing what it's like to be able to be a mentor, and guide youth, and show them that there are opportunities, is something I strive for and work for every day,” said Slavin. "That is what I'm bringing to Milpitas. I’m bringing the Culture of We.”

Daniel Hoady sits in on first meeting as MUSD's new Student Board Rep

MUSD has a new student board representative. Daniel Hoady, a senior at Cal Hills, was excited to sit in on his first board meeting this past Sept. 24.
"It’s a good opportunity and learning experience,” said Hoady. "I’ve been here a couple times to receive awards but have never been a part of the board. Sitting up here is a different angle and perspective on things, and I really like that."
While Hoady admits to liking every subject at school, he said his favorite was English. “I really like to express myself through writing,” he said.
Hoady joins Student Board Rep. Kush Brahmbhatt, who is a student at Milpitas High, up on the dais.
Last spring, Hoady was part of a Cal Hills team that built an electric bike and competed against other teams in Silicon Valley Clean Energy’s (SVCE) Bike to the Future competition. Hoady also started his own clothing brand.
One day, he plans to become a lawyer.

MUSD's Director of Secondary Education Greg Barnes presented the 2018-2019 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results for MUSD. Results included scores from English Language Arts and Math Scores, and also showed how those scores broke down across student groups and ethnicity. In English Language Arts, the graphs showed an upward trend in students’ percentages as they move through the system. The total increase was .3% in the last year alone. Across all school sites, there was an average of 71% proficiency in English Language Arts. Proficiency in Math came in lower at 64%. Also, while 72% in third grade met or exceeded Math standards, only 58% met or exceeded those standards in 11th grade. A thorough conversation was held at the Board meeting to look for opportunities for improvement. A study session will be held in the future to delve deeper into this topic.
