Words from Will...“The Empowering, Inspiring, Confusing Call of God”
I hope that you enjoyed having Ryan McCord preach in our worship services as much as I did. Listening to her take first steps in answering God’s call in her life made me revisit my own calling. And wasn’t it interesting for her to say,
“Our callings are different for the different stages of our lives. Our job is to be obedient."? She did a wonderful job with old Abe, and now we will tangle with the call of Samuel. For Abram the call came late in life – a reminder that we never get too old to answer God’s call. His call meant leaving his homeland and moving to a whole new area he had never seen. For Samuel, the call happens to him as a little boy in his bed near the house of worship. Abram was not called to be a preacher. Samuel kind of was. But one thing we see in the scriptures is that the call of God can and does happen to anyone – young and old, rich and poor, wise and foolish. And often, that call would put into use gifts and skills they had been developing all their lives.
To follow God’s call is to find why you are on this planet – your mission, and only in partnership with God (with God as the senior partner) can that mission become possible. It invites you to move from an ordinary to an extraordinary life. But finding that calling can be an adventure in itself – sometimes triggered by surprising events in life (some good, some bad), sometimes through trial and error (discovering what your calling is NOT), and sometimes through the influence of other people. I am one who believes there is a calling for every follower of Jesus Christ. Sometimes it is a call to the wild and crazy, but most of the time, it is sitting right in front of you, where your gifts and experience meet the needs of the world around you. A nudge, a stirring in your heart, and a burden to make a difference come together as the voice of God. How might God be speaking to you...yes calling you to follow him in changing your corner of the world? This I have learned, a true call from God usually asks for more from me than I could ever do on my own and God always works in ways I never would have predicted. That’s made life challenging, nerve-wrecking, exciting and deeply rewarding. See you Sunday as we further explore God’s call for us all.
Sincerely in Christ,
|
