What the network has been working on  

YouthMappers has launched the 2020 Research Fellowship Program and invites applications for the 9-month program designed to enlist, enable, and showcase the contributions of open geospatial data for research on resilience of vulnerable populations around the world.
 
Research Fellowship teams will include a university faculty mentor together with one undergraduate or graduate student who is currently enrolled in any field at an institution of higher education that has a YouthMappers chapter in good standing. Over the life of the program, the teams will participate in a Research Methodology Symposia held in Washington, D.C. and have the opportunity to exchange ideas with other teams working on research topics related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with an emphasis on the role and use of open geospatial data in addressing global challenges. Deadline is 1 November 2019.


The 2019-2020 YouthMappers Regional Ambassadors have successfully wrapped up their first quarter. In their first four months, the Ambassadors largely engaged in outreach to identify students and faculty interested in creating and officially registering YouthMappers chapters on their university campuses. Through a combination of phone calls, in-person meetings, mapathons, and remote trainings, Regional Ambassadors in Bangladesh and Uganda added 8 new chapters, growing the network to 163 chapters across 63 countries. In addition to providing direct support to students and faculty organizing and applying to join the network, Regional Ambassadors represented YouthMappers at FOSS4G in Bucharest, Romania, State of the Map - US in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the African Green Revolution Forum in Accra, Ghana, the 2019 Geomatics Research Conference, and at the 2019 RCMRD International Conference.

What We Have Been Mapping
UP Resilience Institute YouthMappers has a project "Building Resilient Communities in Bohol Through the Use of OpenStreetMap (OSM)" funded by TELUS International Community Board, with the goal of improving the structures dataset to produce municipal-level risk maps in Bohol.   UPRI YouthMappers help in mapping the structures (building footpri nts and roads) in Bohol through the  HOT  Tasking Manager project #6212


GWU Geography launches the YouthMappers Validation Hub!

This past June, a small cohort of validators began reviewing projects and edits made by YouthMappers on OpenStreetMap (OSM). The primary focus of the validation hub is to retroactively validate YouthMappers mapping activities and create a strategic workflow for monitoring #YouthMappers tasks moving forward. Through this effort we aim to ensure that data produced by YouthMappers chapters if is of high quality. YouthMappers Global Challenge winners from chapters in Bangladesh, Colombia, Ghana, Nepal, Rwanda, Uganda gave presentations on #LetGirlsMap: YouthMappers Growing Female Open Data Leaders and building inclusive environments for youth participation in The Next Generation of Mappers: Learning from YouthMappers.

QUARTERLY SPOTLIGHT: YouthMappers in Action
YouthMappers from the University of Cape Coast participated in the African Green Revolution Forum held in Accra, Ghana September 3-6, 2019. UCC YouthMappers conducted demos in the USAID Feed the Future Classroom on the use of  digital, open technologies in agriculture. They showcased successful chapter projects including their work with the Soybean Innovation Lab on mapping the soybean value chain in Kumasi, Ghana. Read their blog post on the experience here.
