Bill's Book Club For Guys and Betty's Lunchtime Book Club are known throughout the area for their knowledgeable leaders, carefully curated choices, and animated discussions. Now, we are proud to introduce a new kind of book group -- Rachael's Book Club For Kids.

Whiskey When We're Dry by John Larison

It's a good thing she has nerves of steel, great instincts, and even better aim. John Larison has given us an unforgettable cast of characters and a three-dimensional American west that defies stereotypes and mythmaking. This is gritty, honest writing and a story that grips you early and doesn't let go.
In this terrific novel, fifteen-year-old Jo tells her story of sexual abuse at the hands of an older, charismatic teacher at an elite boarding school. The shame, the powerlessness, and the isolation are brilliantly depicted. With pinpoint observations, the great Kate Walbert makes this story all too real and sadly relevant. I read it in one big gulp.
In this lyrical first novel, four ex-classmates from a small rust-belt town in Ohio end up returning on the same night. One is confronting an ex-lover's mother, one is engaged in a possible drug deal, one is trying to forget the Afghan War, and one is desperate for revenge. With gorgeous prose reminiscent of Don Delillo or Thomas Pynchon, Stephen Markley has written the definitive novel about young people and how they are dehumanized by the world today. Wow -- it's the only word that comes to mind!
