GGUSD Hosts State of District to Showcase Student Success
On September 25, GGUSD hosted its first-ever State of the District event to showcase district accomplishments and student successes. At the event, Superintendent Gabriela Mafi and the Board of Education announced the launch of a district-wide Choose Wellness Campaign, and issued a call to action urging the community to engage in district efforts to increase awareness and resources around student motivation, mental health and socio-emotional well-being, and school culture and climate.
More than 300 parents, students, staff members, community partners, and area leaders attended the event held at the Garden Grove Community Center. The afternoon began with a reception featuring appetizers prepared by Rancho Alamitos High School culinary students led by Chef Scott Kim, as well as an impressive performance by the Bolsa Grande High School jazz band under the direction of John Miller. Santiago High School vocal ensemble students, led by Na-Young M. Shin, performed "It Takes a Village" at the conclusion of the event to demonstrate the district's gratitude for parent, staff, and community support.
A video of the event will be shared soon with all GGUSD staff, parents, and students.

GGUSD Board of Education Honors Sylvia Mendez
Last night, Garden Grove Unified School District's Board of Education honored Sylvia Mendez, civil rights activist and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient whose family fought for the desegregation of schools in California! In the words of Ms. Mendez, "the fight for equality can be accomplished by anyone." We were thrilled to thank this brave hero for her family legacy and life's work. She shared with us a heartwarming story, explaining that Garden Grove High School was the first school she visited to speak about her family story and school desegregation, and the encouragement from GGHS students gave her the confidence and will to continue visiting schools to increase awareness about this important piece of history!
