This is only a four-day school week for students as they have no school on Friday, October 18th. Friday will still be a regular work day for teachers as they prepare their plans for the second nine-week quarter -
adjusted OCPS 2019-2020 calendar.
This coming Wednesday, October 16th will be a regular, full-length school day to accommodate testing throughout OCPS. This applies to all OCPS campuses, not just Colonial, so please plan accordingly.
I need to keep these remarks brief as we have used additional space this week to illustrate some of our wonderful Homecoming '19 highlights for the community. Even with a quick scroll, you can see quickly how our school pride shines through. It was an amazing week for students, staff, alumni, and community members. Thank you everyone on an
incredible effort.
Finally, I want to remind all of our Grenadiers to get a good night's rest Tuesday and to eat breakfast Wednesday morning. We want you to do your best on the PSAT/SAT and these two actions will help give you an edge.

Little Shop of Horrors
Little Shop of Horrors was the very first musical ever to be performed in our new Performing Arts Center! Our theatre program, led by
Mrs. Monroe, has learned how to use the new light and sound systems to create an amazing show!

Across campus, students and staff celebrated school pride and SPIRIT Week!
Homecoming week '19 was a successful celebration of all the reasons why it truly is great to be a Grenadier! We are so proud of all of our students for getting into the school spirit!

Clubs and organizations created booths with games, prizes and candy.
Students enjoyed the friendly competition and fun! Pals with Purpose created a sensory booth to help students understand the specific needs of our exceptional education population. Dr. Maestre even made it out to sing karaoke and win big at water pong!

Vital Signs: TRASH DISPOSAL AT THE END OF LUNCH

Area for Improvement
Grenadiers, lately we have noticed that some students are not throwing away their trash at the end of lunch.
When you leave the trash outside in the courtyard, this creates extra work for school staff. Felix and Gary, our two head custodians on main campus and Marlene, our head custodian on freshman campus, spend many hours keeping our campus clean and ready for us! They make sure we have enough supplies in common areas, and they help us set up for special events like Club Rush and Pep Rallies.
Please remember that just like when you move into your own home, whether it be a dorm room or an apartment or house, you will want to maintain a neat space to prevent the spread of bugs and disease. There are trash cans conveniently located throughout the courtyard area, so please remind each other to help maintain your home away from home!

"Catching the Winning Behaviors" - HERO Program
|
Data Tracking: Tardies, Dress Code, and Positive Behaviors (incl. Engagement, random acts of kindness, leadership, character, service, etc.)
From 09/30 through 10/4, there have been over 17,000 behaviors tracked and over 13,000 points given to students. THIS IS AMAZING!
Students can "redeem" their points in the classroom or the deans' offices.

These Grenadiers have earned free Homecoming tickets for being in the top 5 of HERO Points earned. If you would like to earn rewards just for doing good, please speak to your teachers about how you can earn HERO points.

About 60 students entered our Banned Books Week Contest. Everyone who guessed that
Hunger Games was the shredded book received a Chipotle BOGO coupon.
Our grand prize winner was My Tran. She received 2 Chipotle BOGO coupons so her family could join her, as well as an Epic Reads bookbag, autographed copies of
Scythe and
Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman, and a special scythe pin to go along with her books. Congrats to everyone!
More contests started up for October. Design either a bookmark or a poster for LGBTQ+ Awareness Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, or Anti-Bullying Month... created in any medium of your choice. Contact Mrs. Parisi in the media Center if you have questions.

OCPS Exploring Start Time Changes
 The commitment of the district is to develop start time models that maximize the use of the buses and keep costs at a minimum. In the past, other start time models added significant costs for more buses and more drivers. Due to budgetary constraints, those models were eliminated from consideration.
A thorough analysis of school start times takes time. The School Board members and administration are committed to explore options and their consequences.
Four Models Presentation - The link below is a short summary of how bus routes are created; and to inform you of the four cost-neutral start time models that were developed for consideration.

Florida Department of Education: Survey of Public School Students (Grades 6-12)
The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) is consulting parents as stakeholders for state Career Technical Education (CTE) programs as part of the state plan for the federal Perkins Law. They are collecting general information on knowledge and opinions of parents through the 2019 Parent Survey of Public School Students (Grades 6-12). BALANCING LIFE WITH THE LETTER "F"
 It is very easy for many of us to get a bit lopsided in our daily lives neglecting other key aspects that make for an overall happy life. One quick & easy way to help keep yourself on track is to remember the six "F's." As you wrap up each day, take a moment to consider your answers to these questions:
- Faith: This is not just about personal religion. Faith includes a strong belief in yourself. Consider those areas that give you confidence. How did you build faith today?
- Family: How did I touch my loved ones?
- Friends: Did I reach out to two lives today? Did I listen to or help a friend, maybe even someone I don't know through charity or volunteer service?
- Fitness: What did I do to improve my health?
- Financial: How did I create savings or income? If I have a job, did I give it my best today? If I am in school, am I achieving my academic goals so that in the future I might be able to generate wealth? (Education and income levels are linked - click here.)
- Fun: How did I enjoy the day? The things I promised myself I would make time for, did I engage in at least one of them?
Consider these six reminders brought to you by the letter "F" and please remember Grenadiers . . .
