Matching Fund Program Available for Monroe County
|
|
To assist in the development of small businesses, the Monroe County BDC and ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital, via ProMedica Innovations, have created a $500,000 fund that will assist new and existing companies as they launch innovative products and services.
This program was created to provide gap and seed funding assistance for companies. Tim Lake, BDC President and CEO stated, "by nurturing new companies and those in growth mode, this program will assist with both capital formation and job creation within the county."
The application process is open at all times and funding decisions will be issued at any given time that a new and viable project is accepted and agreed upon by the Matching Fund Committee.
On Thursday, July 26, the first recipient,
Vital Tech Services, LLC
, was awarded a check in the amount of $12,500. Funding will be used to launch another aspect of their asset management software.

Community Strategic Economic Development Plan
|
|
Luna Pier has been referred to as Monroe County's only "natural lake front resort community." Luna Pier carries the distinction of being the first city visitors see when entering Michigan via the I-75 Interstate.
In 2017, Luna Pier completed the reconstruction of Luna Pier Road from Harold Drive to the Lighthouse. Recently, after soliciting, reviewing proposals and interviews, the City hired Poggemeyer Design Group, Inc., (PDG) a nationally recognized firm, to assist in a Community Strategic Economic Development Plan. PDG and its subcontractors, LandUseUSA LLC and CIB Planning. They are now working with a City-appointed Steering Committee to develop a plan for a more stable and bright economic future.
A four-phased approach will be used, including Discovery, Collaboration, Visioning and Plan Development. These phases will include understanding community attitudes and preferences, providing strong insights into market forces that present opportunities, identifying projects that will continue to move Luna Pier forward and helping to forge new and strengthened partnerships aimed at gathering support and funding for local initiatives.
Public input is vital to the success of this Plan and input is being accepted via a survey as well as public meetings. The next meeting, the Public Vision Strategy Development Session, will be held August 22, 2018, at 6:30 pm at the Water Tower Park (11345 Harold Drive).

The Marshall Plan: Invest, Develop, Attract Talent

In last month's newsletter, we published some factoids on Michigan's Marshall Plan

The state is funneling $100 million this fall into Michigan's public high schools to train students for high-demand jobs over the next five years. These funds will bolster career-oriented school programs to maintain a pipeline for students from graduation to jobs in professional trade, information technology or other top career fields.
The MEDC has developed workshops to learn more about this plan. The schedule of upcoming classes is listed below. There is a mix of K-12, colleges, and non-profits attending, but more manufacturers and businesses are needed. If you are concerned about talent, please consider participating in one of these workshops:
