August 19, 2018

Sermon: Rev. Jim Berlau
BE SIGNIFICANT: "Go Together"
Scripture: Exodus 1:8-21

When we set out to participate in God's transformation of the world, we soon discover that we can't do it alone. The challenges are too big, the injustice is too entrenched, the evil is too pervasive, and our individual efforts are too inadequate to think we could set things right on our own. The good news is that we don't have to! God never intended for any of us to make the long journey toward justice, reconciliation, and peace on our own. God intends for us to be significant together.
Join a New Small Group Book Study this Fall
"Disciple Fast Track: Remember Who You Are"- This Disciple Fast Track is an adaptation of the original, bestselling Disciple Bible Study: Remember Who You Are. The study is ideal for busy people who want to fit an in-depth Bible study into their schedule. There are 12 sessions on the Old Testament Major and Minor Prophets. The prophets are continually calling hearers and readers back to their God and to a sense of who they are as a people "set apart." The class will led by Pastor Bobbi Jones on Monday mornings from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon starting on September 10th (Duration: 12 weeks - Location: Youth Room).

"Prayer Power with Pastor Bobbi - A Women's Study"- The Battle Plan for Prayer book study (inspired by the movie War Room) is designed to help anyone learn how to become a powerful person of prayer. It begins with defining prayer's core purpose, its biblical design, and its impact throughout history. Then we will explore how effective prayer works and how to develop specific prayer strategies for each area of life. Prayer should be your first plan of attack in all of life's battles, not your last resort. If you want to experience the joy of mightily answered prayer, then it's time to engage with God at another level! This class will be led by Pastor Bobbie Jones on Mondays from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. starting on September 10th(Duration: 12 weeks - Location: Youth Room).

"Embracing the Journey: The Way of Christ" - This book study focuses on an exploration of spiritual formation as an individual and corporate journey toward wholeness and holiness through the grace of God.  Embracing the Journey is the first segment of a five-volume Companions in Christ study.  The 4 other volumes available for future study include: Feeding on the Word, Deepening Our Prayer, Responding to Our Call, and Exploring Spiritual Guidance. This class will be led by Ginger and Tom Selander on Wednesdays from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. starting on September 12th (Duration: 6 weeks - Location: Classroom B).

"Have a New Kid by Friday" - This class is based on Dr. Kevin Leman's bestselling book. A Christian psychologist who has written many books, Dr. Leman combines a healthy dose of common sense psychology and his unique brand of humor to make for a delightful study. Parents don't have to wait weeks or months to see a positive difference in their kids. They'll see better kids in 5 days because they will have become better parents in 5 days. This class will be led by Julie Chatfield Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. starting on September 16th (Duration: 6 weeks - Location: Classroom D).

Volunteer Opportunity at JYE
Peace Church is continuing to build a strong community relationship with John Young Elementary School (JYE). As the last school year came to an end, eight Peace members attended the school for a tour and informal interaction with Principal Rodriguez.  We heard more about the needs of the school and shared our backgrounds and interest in volunteering. Following the discussion it was clear how exciting partnering with JYES was going to be. We agreed to begin our service starting at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year. That time is now upon us and we are hoping to find more people interested in volunteering.  There is a huge need for one on one tutoring and mentoring. The hours and days are flexible, but you must be available to consistently volunteer on a weekly basis during daytime hours. You also must complete a background check through  ADDitions . If this sounds like something you are interested in please sign up on the back table for more information.  If you have questions, you can contact Gena Blackketter @  ([email protected]  ) or call her @ (239-682-5400). We hope you can join this great community partnering opportunity.
Children's Ministry News
Kids' Zone Staff Ready to Go:   As school starts, rest assured your Kids' Zone staff and volunteers are ready for the 2018-2019 school year.  Last Sunday we spent an hour reviewing our classroom policies. Topics included staff and volunteer expectations, handling discipline and injuries, when to get parents involved, bathroom and diaper changes, and what to do in case of an emergency.  Pastor LeeAnn and Pastor Jim stopped by to anoint the crew, blessing us as we begin this new season.  As always, our staff remains certified in CPR and First Aid and background checks are done on a regular basis. We love your children and hope they feel safe, happy and loved while in our care. If you have any questions, or are interested in being a part of our Volunteer Team, please contact Julie Chatfield at [email protected].

Kids' Zone Update :   This is a friendly reminder that all kids who have entered the 6th grade are now considered Youth. It is a normal reaction for 6th graders to long for the fun days of the Kids' Zone and to convince their parents to join our gang, but our lessons are geared towards the younger kiddos and we kindly ask all youth remain with you in Adult worship. Though kids may complain worship is boring, there are a few things you can do to help the experience become more meaningful. First, remember that it will take some time to successfully make the adjustment. Warn your student ahead of time that they have graduated to Youth and will be staying with you in the Sanctuary during worship.  Provide some hard candy to share during the message. Encourage participation in singing and reciting prayers. Help them find the scripture lesson ahead of the worship service so they can read along. Provide a doodle pad and pencil to keep their hands busy.  Encourage them to draw what comes to mind during the service. Make worship a family affair. Introduce them to those you encounter in worship each week. Share with them the parts of worship you enjoy and most important, spend the ride home or time at dinner discussing the morning. You may be surprised to find worship becomes the best part of their week.  - Julie Chatfield, Children's Ministry Director
