DOYLESTOWN - Mardi Busanus celebrated her 20th year of volunteering for LASP’s Doylestown office on Sept. 1. Under the guise of a pro bono meeting at the Bucks County Bar Association, LASP staff and pro bono attorneys surprised her with a small celebration Sept. 25.
Across two decades, Mardi has donated literally thousands of hours to LASP – including 623 hours in 2018-19 alone. "On Wednesdays I go to PFA court to assist the attorneys and court, and on Fridays I am in the office answering phones, assisting clients and handling other office duties," she said. “It’s very satisfying. I’ve carved out my little niche.”
|
|
From time to time, she has helped during staff transitions in temporary paid roles, but always returned to volunteering.
Some of life’s bumps have reinforced her volunteer spirit and have given Mardi compassion for clients. She and her husband, Jim, recently celebrated their 46th anniversary and 50th year since their blind date. Their son, Greg, also volunteered with LASP when he was in high school and college and created the longstanding mail merge system.

|
|
LIHEAP applications open Nov. 1 for 2019-20 home heating season
|
Applications open
Friday, Nov. 1
for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This program helps low-income families pay their heating bills.
"
LIHEAP is a very underutilized program; only approximately 65% of eligible households apply for and receive this benefit
," said Phil Rosenthal, Staff Attorney in Chester city, Delaware County.
To receive help:
- You don’t need to be receiving public assistance/welfare.
- You don’t need to have an unpaid heating bill. Your heat can still be on.
- You can rent or own your home.
There are three parts of LIHEAP.
You can get all three if you qualify:
- Cash grants help with your heating bill. Grants range from $200 - $1,000. It can take up to 30 days to process a cash grant application.
- Crisis grants help families who have an emergency and are in danger of being without heat. Crisis grants range from $25 - $600.
- Weatherization can help families repair or replace an inoperable or inadequate heating system.
The Pennsylvania Dept. of Human Services administers the program through this link:
http://bit.ly/31MTYY8, where you can find more information and
download LIHEAP applications
starting Nov. 1 in English and Spanish. You also may call 1-866-857-7095 to request an application or to ask about the status of your LIHEAP application.
Apply for LIHEAP online at
www.compass.state.pa.us, or
go to your County Assistance Office (CAO) (all are open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday):
