Be Still My Heart: Mr. B flunked out of Florida State and spent many a day job hunting in nearby Georgia. Years later, he still drools in his dreams over deep southern cooking. Now comes Ben Merritt and his Fixture - Kitchen and Social Lounge, who & which have joined the Chamber. While Mr. B was perusing the brunch, lunch and dinner menus to see where your $50 gift card might be best utilized, the Nancy Farrar photo of the chicken and waffles on the brunch menu, well ... OMG, it's jumping off the screen wanting to bond with you. Fixture has grits, it has biscuits, it has bacon and more bacon. And it has some of the most interesting drink concoctions the south has seen. This place is where the biscuit rises. (If you and Mr. B handle this well, maybe Ben & the Kitchen and Social Lounge will become a Fixture giveaway.)

I got the music in me: Performing Arts Fort Worth, Visit Fort Worth and Hear Fort Worth are bringing local/regional music standouts to Fort Worth stages beginning Sept. 5 and the four Wednesdays after that. The Texas Crossroads series debuts at Bass Performance Hall with Vaden Todd Lewis of the Toadies, singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe and Fort Worth-bred singer-songwriters Austin Allsup and Josh Weathers. The next four weeks are at McDavid Studio; artists include Brandon Rhyder, Sam Anderson, Luke Wade, Abraham Alexander and Joey Green. "This new series gives us the opportunity to focus on young, emerging, local talent," said Dione Kennedy, President & CEO of Performing Arts Fort Worth. Unbeknownst to her, "Brad from Bass Hall" staged a ticket coup and sent over a voucher for two to the Sept. 5 opener.

He is soooo hot: Hall of Famer Doug Renfro...that sounds pretty incredible, doesn't it? Doug, a recent inductee to foodie fame, is President of Renfro Foods, makers of more than 30 varieties of Mrs. Renfro's salsas, sauces and relishes. Many with peppers, some with ghost peppers. Some roasted in Carolina, some in New Mexico. The Renfro brand is hot, hot, hot. There are salsas with peach, with raspberry, with mango. And some with beer. If you don't dip with Renfro's, you're not dipping. B2B Insider was allowed to dip into a special allotment and came away with boxes with four jars, a variety pack. Adding this bit of relish to this tribute to fame: If you ever get a chance to hear Doug speak, he could be top 5 in town. And he brings samples.

Zero in on sales: There are companies paying $150 to third parties to set up meetings with prospects. Here is your opportunity to get approximately 1,800 leads and contact information for all the top companies in Tarrant and Denton counties. It's the Fort Worth Business Press' renowned Book of Lists, which is available year-round through the Chamber. Listed in the book are top companies in 60+ industries. There's information on sales, top customers / clients, headquarters, the top local executive and only a few bothersome "did not disclose(s)." Which doesn't close the door; it only makes the meeting more difficult and the eventual sale sweeter. Don't be left out in the sales cold.

Congratulations to the August 8th
Prize Winners:

A WORD FROM OUR GOLD SPONSORS

HE SAID, SHE SAID, THEY SAIDSoundBytes
We love a parade: So does GM Financial, the new title sponsor of the Downtown Fort Worth Initiatives' Parade of Lights Nov. 18 in downtown Fort Worth. GM Financial signed a five-year agreement. I's CEO, Dan Berce, is a former Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors. Former parade sponsor XTO has moved its headquarters to Houston.

Another Hall of Famer:
Former Star-Telegram columnist Bob Ray Sanders, now helping the Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce with media and the City of Fort Worth as a designated leader for its Race & Culture Task Force, was inducted into the National Association of Black Journalist Hall of Fame earlier this month.

Fair to middlin': Travis Chaffin of Ace Tire has to be careful in the sun. His dad passed away because of skin cancer and Travis is hair-not-there up top. "I use a 100 SPF," he said. "It's like Elmer's wood glue."

I scream, we all scream... : B2B Insider asked Don Scoggins at Blue Bell for scoops on beating the heat. "We eat all we can, which helps us cope with the heat, and sell the rest," he said. "We released our 12-pack Fudge Bars recently, which has been a big hit. We also released a new flavor - Key Lime Mango Tart."

Potty talk: MMG Building and Construction Services has gone up in (Cally) Smoke. You might remember Cally, MMG's Princess of its Port-a-Potty placements. MMG has been purchased by United Rentals and Cally, flush with excitement and enthusiasm, is a global Product Development Manager. "It means total portable sanitation world domination," she said. Her product focus will be the luxury commodes.

Rocky Mountain high: Jake Richter just completed his 10th 100-mile run, this one in Ouray, CO. The Edward Jones financial finagler was running in support of former Junior Achievement achiever and ALS combatant Sunny Brous Erasmus. This epic was a run that climbed to 13,340 feet, with an average elevation of 10,200 feet. Breathtaking in more ways than one. It took Jake 52 hours to complete, which covers two sunsets and sunrises; his fastest 100-miler is just under 24 hours. The run was a pit stop during a family vacation in its "new" camper, a 1979 Airstream Argosy.
"Company policy is no good if you don't follow it."

-- Philip Vickers, Partner
Cantey Hanger LLP

Ross stores sales knowledge: James Ross, new sales trainer with franchisee Scott Sherwin's Sandler Training, was a sales manager for NERD Power. And a former NERD is going to teach sales? Well, yeah. NERD is National Energy Reduction Design; it's basically all about solar power.

5 degrees of separation: Here's a sneak peek of the Chamber's Strategic Plan goals from Dr. Anthony (ER) Edwards, the SVP of Talent Development, Attraction & Retention -- 1) a 5 percent increase in the 25+ population with a bachelor's degree; 2) a 5 percent increase in the 25+ population with post-secondary degree, license or certification; 3) a 10 percent increase in talent supply for targeted industries.

Holy guacamole! Move over Michael Jordan, New York Yankees, Boston Celtics, Montreal Canadiens. Sister Cities International recently named Fort Worth Sister Cities best in the USA for 2018, the ninth title in its history.

The big reveal(s): Mr. B once spoke to a Chamber group. He received a business card holder with a Chamber logo. Cynthia St. John spoke to Chamber members last week at the Impact Your Business luncheon at Joe T. Garcia's. She got a bottle of TX Whiskey from Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co. Just sayin'. So what sayeth Cynthia, owner of Chiefology, during her talk on the three common mistakes leaders make that limit their effectiveness?
  • Mistakes --1) Doing the wrong things; 2) Doing the right things wrong; 3) Doing the same thing.
  • Her Core +4 Framework for success --1) Establish direction; 2) Execute; 3) Engage; 4) Evolve.
On the straight and narrow: If the name Buddy Calzada, a new press spokesperson in the Fort Worth Police Chief's office, seems familiar, it is. He is the brother of Nate Calzada, construction boss at Trinity Habitat for Humanity.
