Opportunities to vote: 
We encourage all USD 253 patrons to vote in the upcoming bond election on November 5th.  Other opportunities to vote are listed below.  If you have any questions please contact Tammy Vopat at the Lyon County Clerk's office at 620-341-3243.
Homeless Education:
The term homeless children and youth means the lack of a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.  For more information and what you should know click here . Student and Family Resources Clothing Drive:
The annual clothing drive sponsored by Student and Family Resources will begin collecting donations on October 5th.  Please bring new or gently used clothing items to any of our collection sites. Available locations include Goods, Flinthills Mall, Dillons, KVOE, Emporia Mainstreet, and Emporia Gazette.

Early Resignation and Retirement Notification Incentive:
Any licensed teacher who has worked greater than two years in USD 253 who is planning to resign or retire at the end of the school year is eligible to receive an early notification stipend.  A written resignation or retirement notice must be submitted to the assistant superintendent of Human Resources. Stipends will be awarded according to the time table below at the end of the contract year. 
Written notification received by:
  • October 1st would receive $1,000
  • November 1st would receive $750
  • December 1st would receive $500
  • January 1st would receive $250

KPERS Optional Life Insurance:
KPERS Optional Life Insurance open enrollment is September 1-30.  As part of your KPERS benefits, you have the opportunity to purchase additional coverage beyond KPERS basic life insurance.  You can decide how much you need and pay your premiums through payroll deduction. Personal Illness Pool:
The deadline to start your involvement in the Personal Illness Pool is Tuesday, October 1. All employees on contract or work agreement are eligible to participate.  If you are already participating in the pool, it will remain in effect as long as you are with USD 253, unless you inform the Payroll Office that you no longer wish to participate. Kids ages 4-11 can get hands-on theatre experience with the Emporia High School Theatre students.

Open House Opportunities: If you have not been inside your neighborhood schools recently, you are encouraged to visit them during one of our upcoming open houses. Village, Logan Avenue, William Allen White, Maynard, and Emporia Middle School will be open for tours and informal conversations on the following dates.

Members of the First United Methodist Church and their community partners were recognized by the board for their generous donation of school supplies.

Students and their families participated in a variety of fun activities on Tuesday evening at the Maynard Family Fun Night.

Board Recognition:
The board recognized the First United Methodist Church for organizing the 2019-20 school supply donations and their major donors. Grace United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church, Harry, Evelyn, and Ester Henrikson, United Methodist Men - FUMC, Jones Trust, Anette and Andy Legako, Reeble Foundation, Rotary Club of Emporia, Jamie Sauder (ERG), Paula Sauder, and Sauder Youth Fund.  Their generous donation purchased all school supplies for Emporia Public School students in all grades.

  • dispose of district school surplus and three vehicles via internet auction
  • grant of $1,000 from Frontier Farm Credit to William Allen White Elementary for a mini tallgrass prairie garden

  • Memorandum of Understanding maintaining a positive working relationship with ECKAN Head Start and a smooth transition of students into or out of USD 253 special services
  • donation of $2,000 from Two Rivers Youth Soccer to Emporia Middle School to purchase equipment for the team

  • Maynard staff participated in a ThoughExchange to share their priorities for a new early learning center

  • the general election is on November 5th
Early Learning Facility Priorities:
The Board of Education continues to discuss, develop, and finalize priorities that they want to see included with the proposed new early learning facility.  Board members and those in attendance participated in a ThoughtExchange regarding early learning priorities. This allowed everyone the opportunity to share and prioritize their thoughts on what concepts are important in providing the best possible learning environment for all students. HTK will work collaboratively with USD 253 to begin including the top priorities into the next phase of the project. District representatives will be touring early learning facilities during the week of October 14 to gather additional information.
