Local Church Leadership Connection
|
In an effort to address isolation which some local church leaders feel, letters of invitation are being sent to local church leaders to participate in an initial conversation with others within the Alaska Conference serving in the same local church leadership role.
The effort is triggered from the work of a small task force created by the conference Leadership Team.
The goal of our first phase of connection is to create a network of support, collaboration, information sharing, and leadership development among our lay people in local church leadership roles.
Invitations have been sent out to the following groups for these initial conversations scheduled to happen as noted below:

Marciales to lead Mesa Sagrada in the Mat-Su
|
 Caesar Marciales has taken over leadership of the P.L.U.M.E.-born missional community known as Mesa Sagrada (the sacred table). Please join us in praying for Caesar as well as supporting this vital multi-ethnic, multi-generational, multi-denominational ministry in the Mat-Su. Mesa Sagrada gathers for dinner church and one monthly outreach activity (TBD) with 35 people from a variety of faith backgrounds. To give you a sense of the group, Mesa is comprised of UM, ELCA, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah's Witness, non-denominational, and non-Christians. Our group is Latinx, Asian, Native Alaskan, and White. Mesa has members who are LGBTQIA+ and cisgender, single and married, ages 0-65+.
We congratulate Caesar on stepping out faithfully to answer God's call to serve this community of God's beloved children. Caesar is married to Deaconess and Executive Director of Valley Interfaith Action (VIA), Kelly Marciales.

Mission u registration open!
|
 Yearly Mission u events take place in every United Methodist Conference. This year, the studies are Embracing Wholeness: An Earth Perspective for Covenantal Living which will be led by Linda Haynes and What About Our Money? A Faith Response led by Susan Williams. The first event will be held in Anchorage at Jewel Lake Parish (October 19-20). The second event will be held in Nikiski at North Star UMC (November 2-3). The third and last event will be held in Sitka at UMC of Sitka (January 11-12). EVERYONE is invited to attend. These events are not just for women. Position Title: WEDNESDAY NIGHT SUPPER KITCHEN COORDINATOR (WKC)
The WKC is responsible for overseeing the planning, ordering, recruiting, scheduling, training, and coordinating of the Wednesday Night Suppers with the objective of providing a welcoming, delicious, and wholesome meal for our guests.
Qualifications:
The WKC has excellent communication skills and is able to lead and work as part of a team. This person has a meticulous and keen eye for details. The WKC has earned at least a high school diploma and possesses experience in volunteer management, training, and cooking in a commercial kitchen for large groups of people.

Health Ministry opportunity
|
 Tara Orley, Faith Community Nurse Coordinator at Providence hospital, would like to invite members of your congregations to attend an upcoming introduction to health ministry in faith communities. This course will help members of our faith communities look at ways we can work together to use our gifts and skills to truly make our congregations a place of healing for minds, bodies and spirits. It is geared to those without a medical background. In communities with a faith community nurse, they will be great team members. In communities where there is not an existing health ministry, we will look at ways to join forces and recognize some common ground and identify some concrete beginning actions. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions. The sessions are Sept 11 (6-9 pm), Sept 15 (10 am-3 pm), Sept 25 (6-9 pm), and Sept 29 (10 am-3 pm). The cost is $50 which includes meals, snacks and materials. Register at www.alaska.providence.org/education (click on the calendar and search/select topic "Faith Community Nursing"). Tara is eager to answer any questions or provide any further information about this ministry if you have questions.

Silver anniversary celebration with United Campus Minsitry
|
Nona Howard is searching for individuals who have been students at University of Alaska Fairbanks and were part of the United Campus Ministry program, especially those who attended in the last 25 years. October 13th is UCM's annual fund raiser but this year it will also be a Silver Anniversary event to commemorate David Moore's 25 years as Director of UCM Fairbanks. David is in touch with many former students but some have slipped away. They're now requesting your help in locating those he has lost touch with. Nona would like to have them be a part of this event or to send a card, letter or email if they aren't able to be present. The notes would be read or given to David. If you have a few words about your UCM experience and what you are currently up to these days, please send them to Nona. UCM started here in 1961, all who participated are invited too.

Commission on a Way Forward Videos
|
The Commission on a Way Forward has released all 10 videos of a series that the Commission hopes will inform The United Methodist Church on its processes and work done during the 18-month period of its meetings and deliberations. The videos can be viewed on Facebook or YouTube and can be downloaded for viewing offline. The Alaska Conference will be highlighting one each week for the next 10 weeks.
Week 2
Gil Rendle gives an overview of the Purpose, Principles and Importance of the work of the Commission. This video was recorded during the final Commission meeting in May 2018. The video gives an in-depth theological and technical overview of the work done by the Commission that helps to frame the task given to the delegates to the February 2019 General Conference. Top court sets October oral hearings
|
 The United Methodist Judicial Council has announced that it will hold three oral hearings the first day of its Oct. 23-26 meeting, including a hearing on a request by the Council of Bishops to rule on whether the proposed legislation for the One Church, Connectional Conference and Traditional plans for the special General Conference in February 2019 is constitutional.

 The Commission on United Methodist Men is looking beyond the special General Conference in February. The 20-member commission's focus is on ways to expand ministries to men, Scouting and other youth-serving agencies.
