Message From the Principal
Dear Barry Primary Families,
Students are settling in and learning our routines in the classroom, hallways, and lunch room. It has been a great month of getting to know you activities and our children have already made connections with new friends while reconnecting with past friends.

Please be mindful of spontaneously picking up your child at the end of the school day (after 1:30 p.m.). This causes a lot of confusion for your child. This is a classroom interruption that effects all of the students in your child's class and takes away from their learning. Please send in a note with your child for any changes in dismissal every time a change occurs. The fewer the changes the more confident your child becomes with daily routines at school regarding dismissal.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to adjust to the transition of becoming Barry Primary School.

Sincerely,
Lisa S. Kaup
Picture Day is 10/04

Art News
Barry Primary students are learning what is looks and feels like to be an artist! They are starting their year of creativity by learning studio habits, receiving sketchbooks and exploring together with their imaginations! Our artists are excited to have playful work adorning the school walls very soon!
First Graders Demonstrate Teamwork
First Graders in Mrs. Canestaro and Miss Beeman’s classroom showed the Positivity Project strength of the week of Teamwork in Listening and Learning. Students worked in pairs to recall a past read fable or folktale and then came up with a plan together for how to best illustrate that picture on their paper. This was our Culminating Activity as we finished up this Domain.
McGruff the Crime Dog Visits Barry Primary
Officer Reyngoudt stopped by Barry Primary on Friday September 2- and greeted students coming to school. McGruff the crime dog is a national symbol for student safety.

Through television commercials, comic books, live appearances, and more, McGruff has encouraged Americans to take common-sense steps to reduce crime. Some of his favorite messages are:
  • To lock doors, leave the lights on when away from home, and let neighbors know when you go on vacation
  • Do things that build a sense of neighborhood and create communities that don’t produce crime and where people look out for each other and kids feel safe
  • Get involved, join Neighborhood Watch, and clean up streets and parks
  • For children and teens to protect themselves from substance abuse

Second Graders Study Paul Bunyon
Second graders in Mrs. Smith’s and Mrs. Heavens-Soda’s classroom learned about Paul Bunyan! They listened to the story of this famous lumberjack and talked about the exaggerations that took place in the story. They learned that an exaggeration is something that is true but has been elaborated to make it seem better or worse than it really was. After listening to the story they drew pictures and wrote sentences about their favorite exaggerations from the story. Some of the favorites were a blue ox, sleeping in a wagon as a baby, and making a giant wave by rolling over on a raft!
Second Graders Gain Independence
In the 2B wing Ms. Browning, Mr. Miller, and Mrs. Ryan’s classes are getting used to their new skills based math groups. We are gaining independence and responsibility for ourselves and materials as we get ready to transition each day. While focusing on reviewing essential skills we’re also setting up and learning how to use our tablets as tools.

We’ve had a crazy lady in a lab coat running around our wing too! She delivered balloons to help us learn about gases in our States of Matter Science unit.
We will also be reading our first CKLA reader called The Cat Bandit about a mischievous and very hungry cat.
Kindergartners Create Ramps
Kindergartners have been exploring forces and motion. They created ramps to observe how objects change speed depending on the height of the ramp. This was a great activity to do to explore how force and motion work!
