Letter from the Director - David Elkins
|
|
Wow, what a opening for Safe Harbor Jefferson Co. We have in just a few months experienced opportunities to see men's lives changed for the cause of Christ! Almost near capacity and it is more than evident that so many men are hopeless with out Christ!
With some staff changes and reorganizing, we are coming together as a family and maximizing the talents and gifts God has given us. We want to recognize our newest Staff Member Jeffery Carter who has assumed the Program Coordinators duties. And I want to give a great shout out to all who have showed support and volunteer to get Safe Harbor JC up and running, and who pray for us daily.
We are seeking Jesus for direction and opportunity to start the next phase of our growth to have the opportunity to serve more men! Please pray with us!
We Hope to announce soon, His next plans Safe Harbor JC!
To Him Be The Glory

Spotlight Staff Member - Carson Danley, Reliable Coordinator
|
|
Carson transferred from Nashville and was introduced to a completely new aspect of the Reliable/Faith Works Program as 80% of our work force is from other programs working through Faith Works. He put his mind to understanding and mastering our unique working arrangements and challenges, while spending tireless hours organizing and understanding our partners needs. Carson came from the "School of Hard Knocks " but has allowed Jesus to enter his Heart and show him that what is most important to Him! Since then I have seen Carson's heart of compassion and genuine care for the men under his leadership blossom. For this reason Carson is my hero Staff Member of the quarter.

“I got out of jail in October of 2018, I was out for a week and decided that I needed to get myself into a better situation. I had been hooked on Meth for the better part of the last 2 decades. That is when the Safe Harbor program seemingly fell into my lap. The experiences I gained being in the Safe Harbor program have no price-tag. I have enjoyed rekindling my relationship with Christ in the time I have spent here. I learned what it was like to show compassion for others in similar circumstances as me. I also learned to "give more than take" in terms of my time and energy in others. I broke my hand on a job site and was on the side lines for about 45 days. During that time it allowed me to mentor to others in the program so it was certainly a blessing in disguise, even though I did not recognize it at the time. Also, I feel like I have learned stress and anger management techniques through the courses that Safe Harbor teaches. I came in the program with many prejudices and I know the program has helped me as an individual overcome those. I am glad for my experience over the last 180+ days of my stay. You learn to gain the trust of others through actions and not words being in the program. I would certainly recommend the program to others but it is not easy, I learned that quickly. It takes patience and diligence to complete this program and it takes lighting the flame of Christ in your heart to truly be successful. It is certainly a hands on program that will teach you the value of time and that value is limited but, the things we do for others in Christ are Forever.”

“I first heard the gospel when I was a little boy, I grew up in church. My grandmother would take me to mission with her and Mrs. lock-ins every morning. I was in a mime group in the 6th grade where I found my own church home, and that was the first time I got baptized. After my grandmother died I found myself walking away from God. Then as I got older I started running from God. Since I was 16 I was doing everything I thought I was big and bad enough to do, from smoking to drinking to pills to getting arrested, you name it I was into it. I just kept running from God. I ran to and from state to state. I ended up coming down to Knoxville, still doing foolish things, never tried to change one bit. I ended up catching a case down here, got locked up, and didn’t have not one number to call, and when I did get that number it didn’t help at all. But I had enough sense to call on God. I always believed in God even when I was doing things I knew I shouldn’t have been doing. I would think to myself if I keep living like this I’m going to hell. I remember when I was in my cell with no one to talk to, not even my mother. I called on the Lord and asked him for a 2nd chance. He said if I give you one what will you do with it. I cried to God and told him I would change my life.
After I got out of jail I called my mom and we talked for a while. She said I am sending you some money, go to Walmart and get you a bible. She gave me a couple verses but the one I like is Romans 8:28. I never read Romans 8:28. I liked it because it was my birthday. I started to read, Romans 8:28 says “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” I was looking for more understanding and my bible took me to 2 Timothy 1:9. It says “who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.”
As I kept reading the Word of God became my magnet. I read 2 Timothy 1 and it took me to Acts 9:15. It says “But the Lord said to him “go, for he is a chosen vessel of mine to bear my name before Gentiles, Kings and the children of Israel.” For that to be the first time I have read a bible in over 13, maybe 14 years, I closed it. It was too much. I told God, I know I am not to question you, and I know you don’t make no mistakes. I told God whatever you want me to do I will do it. And ever since then He has been moving in my life in ways I can’t explain.
He has humbled me, He has changed the walk I walk, the way I talk, the way I think, and the way I act. He showed me how to pray and how to be patient on what I ask for. He is showing me how to be obedient. As I talk to God and read my word, this is not just about my freedom, but it is also about my soul. I am trying to become a new person, a new man in Christ.
In 2 Corinthians 5:17 it says “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, old things have passed away, behold all things have become new.”

Client Testimony - Curtis Smith

Growing up was a challenge for me. My mom was with an abusive man who made life very difficult for us. After my mom got tired of the abuse we moved to Michigan and around 10 or 11 I started smoking weed getting in trouble at school and things just started happening that was not good. Mom decided to move back to Tennessee but by then I was soon strung out, using pills. When I got old enough to be on my own I went back to Michigan. Tried to begin a relationship with my real father only to see him die from an overdose. Came back to Tennessee strung out on heroin, OD ‘ed and went to rehab. Found Jesus in rehab and had a new outlook on life. Went back home serving Jesus doing the right thing until one day I decided to go see an old friend… back on pills, back in active addiction, ended up in rehab two more times. Back out just to find each time not enough to sustain me and keep me clean. Back in active addiction lost my job all the characteristics of an addict was evident in my life; liar, thief, and disgust. I cried out to my mom and asked her for help! She found Safe Harbor. When I got here I felt like Safe Harbor was just another program but I found out Jesus is real and He hasn't given up on me!! I've grown closer to Him than I've ever been. He is showing me that I'm worthy to be his son. Safe Harbor of Jefferson County is not like any other rehab I've ever been in. Life is good, I love my job I get to spend time with Jesus and grow in the knowledge of who He is.
To God be the glory!
