MAFP and MRPSP Meet with MHA to Promote ROMP

Beth Embry, MAFP Executive Director, and Wahnee Sherman, Mississippi  Rural Physicians Scholarship Program Executive Director, attended the March 9 meeting of the MS Rural Hospital Alliance Meeting to invite their 41 members to participate in the upcoming Rural Opportunities for Mississippi Physicians Career Fair (ROMP) which will take place in conjunction with the MAFP Spring Conference and MAFPF Spring Fling, April 21 - 23 at the Jackson Marriott.

Embry explained that one of the 5 goals of the MAFP is expanding the family physician workforce to meet rural community needs.  She emphasized the need to all work together to provide support for recruiting rural physicians. Ms. Sherman encouraged all to attend ROMP to meet the students or "plant seeds," even with first year medical students.  She shared stories of working with many rural hospitals to place primary care physicians in their hometowns.  Eleven of the Rural Hospital Alliance members attended ROMP in 2016 and more are expected to attend this year.
MAFP Spring Conference Offers Chance to See

Pine Belt Kids Learn About Dangers of Tobacco

WCUCOM student Matthew Kon of Matthews, NC, does a "sticky man" activity with Lamar Christian School students to teach them the dangers of tobacco use.
Teaching kids about the dangers of tobacco use is one of the fun things that medical students get to do outside of the classroom. Recently, the osteopathic medical students 1 (OMS) class at William Carey University College of Medicine (WCUCOM) took the 'Tar Wars' curriculum to Lamar Christian School in Purvis and did activities with the 4th, 5th and 6th graders. WCUCOM has planned many more school visits this spring in Hattiesburg and Sumrall. The faculty advisors for the program at WCUCOM are Dr. Melissa Stephens, Dr. Carol Morreale, and Dr. Tonya Creech. To schedule a visit at your local school, contact Jewell Buckley at MAFP.

RESIDENTS:  Jump in with both feet!
Get involved in MAFP by attending the Annual Meeting

Now's your chance! If you're a resident, you can apply for a scholarship to attend the MAFP Annual Scientific Assembly in July, and it will cover your room, registration and meals at the 5-day event. The MAFP Annual Meeting provides opportunities for family physicians from across the state to connect with each other, network with those in collaborative roles and earn continuing medical education credits. If you're chosen, you'll enjoy the meeting at no charge.

A financial endowment was given to the MAFP Foundation in Dr. Dewitt G. Crawford's memory by Mrs. Dewitt G. Crawford to fund this scholarship. How does a resident qualify? One Dewitt G. Crawford, MD Scholarship will be awarded each year to a deserving resident who best demonstrates the character qualities of:
  • leadership gained through life experience in their job, education, and/or service or volunteer opportunities
  • shows a commitment to future involvement as a leader with the MAFP
All completed applications must be submitted to Kay-Lynn Meador no later than May 1 to be considered. Click here for the scholarship application.
