President's Letter
Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to participate and attend the News Literacy Working Group at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. It was convened in partnership with Facebook and brought together about 50 people from technology, journalism, philanthropy and education. Our goal was to identify problems, offer solutions and build relationships to take action together working across journalists, media companies, media literacy educators and the various outlets that disseminate the news in addressing the fake news issue.
Take a moment to read Dan Gilmor's blog post reflecting on the many insights and ideas from participating in the weekend.
Also, check out this visual illustrating the discussion.
And as a NAMLE member, we need your help in ensuring everyone is media literate. It starts with each of us individually taking the time to ask critical questions on the media we create, consume and share, but it's also about helping
your neighbor. Start a conversation and encourage others to form habits of inquiry. For some keen advice to share, check out Michelle talking with Brian Stelter from CNN.
Let's keep Media Literacy in the news and on the tips of everyone's tongue. Thanks for your help!
Erin B. Reilly
President, NAMLE

M-Passion
ed: Meet our Members
"There is a close relationship between the critical and close reading of books and the critical and close reading of the digital environment. Regardless of what students are reading-a paperback or an online article- I encourage them to ask the necessary questions such as, "Is this story fair? Who is included and who is left out? How does this text deal with individuals and with groups?" In doing so, I hope to do my part in creating a more democratic and socially conscious society."
