Friday, October 4, at 3:30 p.m., journalist Rebecca Robinson and photographer Stephen E. Strom will speak about their book "Voices from Bears Ears: Seeking Common Ground on Sacred Land."

A land rich in history and unsurpassed in natural beauty, Bears Ears National Monument is at the heart of a national debate over the future of public lands. Through stories and images, Robinson and Strom will enable the audience to hear and see the people whose lives are intertwined with this special place.
Sedona Public Library's environmental series is supported by a grant from the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Learn About Self-Publishing at Indie Author Day

Local indie authors, don't miss Indie Author Day at the Library on
Saturday, October 12, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the community room.
The Indie Author Day schedule includes three sessions taught by experienced authors:
- Session 1: Turning Real Life into Fiction, by Robert Louis DeMayo, 1:15 p.m.
- Session 2: There's More to Publishing than Just Writing a Book, by Kim Boykin, 2:15 p.m.
- Session 3: Critical Tools for Marketing Your Book, by Diane Phelps Budden, 3:15 p.m.
The Indie Author Day program is free and open to the public.

online events calendar to view the monthly schedule of programs at the Library, including these upcoming events:
- Scarlet Macaws Program: On Tuesday, October 1, at 11 a.m. in the community room, Kelley Taylor will present "Scarlet Macaws in the Desert Southwest," a lecture and demonstration featuring two captive-bred scarlet macaws. Learn about macaw conservation and protection in the wild, as Taylor shares the rich history of scarlet macaws in the Southwest. This program is free and open to all ages.
- Conversational French Group: The group will meet on Tuesday, October 1 and 15, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Quiet Study. Intended for intermediate-level speakers, the group provides an opportunity for those with some prior knowledge to practice their French.
- Drum Circle: Join us for an interactive drum circle and music jam lead by Paul Blasi on Tuesday, October 1, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and on Friday, October 18, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. All are welcome at this free program.
- Conversational Spanish Group: The group meets every Wednesday evening, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Library.
- Cryptocurrency Group: Interested in investing in cryptocurrencies? You're invited to attend meetings of the Crypto group every Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Quiet Study. This free program is open to the public.
- Book Club: Join us at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8, in the Quiet Study for a discussion of "The Immortalists," by Chloe Benjamin.
- Healthy Aging Lecture Series: Mike Yuen, PhD, is teaching a four-part series at the Library entitled "Chinese Secrets to Healthy Aging and Longevity." Part 2 of the series, "How Thoughts and Consciousness Influence Your Body," will be on Tuesday, October 8, at 2 p.m. in the community room. Part 3, "Analysis of the Longevity Journeys of Real People," will be on Tuesday, October 22, at 2 p.m. These free programs are open to the public.
- Coffee with a Veteran: Meet astrophysicist Alma Ruiz-Velasco, PhD, of Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff at Coffee with a Veteran on Friday, October 11, from 10 a.m. to noon in the community room. At this free event, Ruiz-Velasco will speak about the past, present, and future of the Observatory and its programs.
- Socrates Cafe: The group, a forum for discussing fundamental human questions, will meet on Monday, October 14, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., in the Quiet Study. Please RSVP at the reference desk for this free program.
- Health Screening: A free health screening will be held on Tuesday, October 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the community room. Provided and funded by Northern Arizona Healthcare, the screening is designed to assess the risk of diabetes and heart disease by measuring cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and blood glucose.

 Dia de los Muertos Altar Making: On Thursday, October 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the community room, make an altar (ofrenda) in celebration of Dia de los Muertos. An altar can be in honor of a relative, friend, or pet who has passed away. It can consist of pictures, candles, flowers, foods, and other items. Altars will be displayed at the Library and then taken to Tlaquepaque for their Dia de los Muertos exhibit from October 31 to November 2. Altars can be picked up afterwards. Stop by the reference desk to pick up a suggested materials list. Shoeboxes and some decorations for the altars will be provided. Sugar skulls and clay sugar skulls will be also be available to decorate at the event and take home.
- iPad/iPhone/Mac Workshop: The Oak Creek Apples Macintosh User Group is offering a general question-and-answer workshop on iPads, iPhones, and Mac computers on Saturday, October 19, from 10 a.m. to noon in the community room. Pre-registration is suggested for this free program by emailing [email protected]. All are welcome.
- Nonfiction Book Club: The group will meet on Tuesday, October 22, at 4 p.m. in the Quiet Study. This month's selection is "The Devil's Highway," by Luis Alberto Urrea.
- Library Spooktacular!: Join us for a Halloween and Dia de los Muertos event for adults on Friday, November 1. There will be a variety of activities for your enjoyment during the day. Questions? Contact the reference desk, 928-282-7714, ext. 114.
- Poetry and Prose Project: Join us on Friday, November 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the community room, for a special Halloween/Dia de los Muertos-themed program, with host Gary Every.

Youth Highlights in October

On International Archaeology Day,
Saturday, October 19
, Matt Guebard will present an educational, free, and fun family event at 1:30 p.m. in the community room. Matt, Chief of Cultural Resources at Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monument, will talk about Verde Valley history and historical sites built between 1,400 and 100 years ago: pit houses, pueblos, dugouts, and cabins. Participants will see photographs and touch real artifacts, including ancient ceramic pots, projectile points, and shell jewelry. Learn about the past and find out why protecting archaeological sites and historic places is important.
On
Wednesdays, early school dismissal means head to the Library! At 1:30 p.m., we often offer youth activities in the community room. This month, we have the Disney movie
Coco on October 9, Crafternoon with Marcia on October 16, and a Shaky Makey art opportunity on October 30. (Youth under age 10 must have parent/caregiver nearby.)

- Computer Basics: Internet, Tuesday, October 1, 9 to 10 a.m. Learn how to use a browser to access the Internet and use Google to find information.
- Microsoft Word (Basic), Tuesday, October 8, 9 to 10:30 a.m. Learn how to create and edit a document with Microsoft Word.
- Computer Basics: Saving and Finding Files, Thursday, October 10, 9 to 10 a.m. Learn how your computer is organized and how to find files and folders.
- Computer Basics: Email, Tuesday, October 15, 9 to 10 a.m. Learn how to send and receive email, navigate your inbox, and download and attach files.
- Social Media, Tuesday, October 22, 9 to 10:30 a.m. Learn how to get started with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. No existing accounts required.
- Computer Basics: Getting Started, Thursday, October 24, 9 to 10 a.m. Learn the basics of using a computer and practice using a keyboard and mouse. No computer experience required.

Three Identical Strangers at the Reel Life Movie Night film series on
Tuesday, October 22. This compelling film follows three triplets who were separated at birth under shocking circumstances.
Reel Life Movie Night is held on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the community room.

Library News from the Village

- Arizona Humanities Program: Any woman who came West in the 1800s had to be full of grit and spit to survive. Jana Bommersbach has collected the accounts of dozens of women who proved that. Hear their stories at Bommersbach's Arizona Humanities presentation "Hellraising, Heroic, and Hidden Women of the Wild West," on Monday, October 14, at 1:30 p.m.
The program will be held at the Church of the Nazarene, 55 Rojo Drive in the Village of Oak Creek. Sponsored by Arizona Humanities and Friends of the Sedona Library, the presentation is free and open to the public.

 Community Book Discussion: Participate in the community book discussion of "Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country," by Pam Houston, on Tuesday, October 29, at 1:30 p.m. at Sedona Winds. If you need assistance placing a hold, please contact the Library.
Community book discussions, sponsored by the Library and facilitated by library staff, are the last Tuesday of every month. They are free and open to the public.
