News from Club Captain - Shane McGarvey

Cyder With Rosie
Our ladies captain Rosie Braithwaite had plenty to celebrate after leading her Berkshire Diamonds team to a resounding victory in the inaugural Cyder Cup.

The Berkshire Diamonds and the Royal Berkshires, named after ciders brewed by the sponsors, Tutts Clump Cider Ltd. competed for the prestigious Cyder Cup over two days on September 28th and 29th.

The competition was loosely based on the Ryder Cup and after day one of foursomes and 4BBB the sides were tied at three-all.
However, an impressive run of wins in the Sunday singles resulted in a win for Berkshire Diamonds by 10 and a half points to 7 and a half.
The presentation of the trophy by Tutts Clump Cider MD Mr Tim Wale, followed a lunch on the Sunday, beautifully prepared by Mrs Jan McGarvey.
Members took good advantage of the ciders on offer at the bar, with many taking bottles home for later consumption.

Congratulations to Rosie Braithwaite (capt), Darryl Boulton, Jack Hawkins,
Stuart Lyons, Tony Hedley, Andy Sale, Doug Wylie, David Norville
Brian Holmes, Darren Blackwood, Sarah Mitchell,
Annette Dickens, Barbara Carr, Mary Bedwell and Crispy Kidson.

If you liked Tutts Clump Proper Cider so much you want to buy the company, now you can. Well, some of it. Tim Wale is looking for investors to help fund the next stage of expansion of his growing cider business.

It’s a knockout

Two of the men’s summer tournaments have reached their climax with exciting finals. In the 18-hole pairs, Andy Sale and Tony Hedley beat Bob Gadsden and Frank Bird 3&2, while in the 9-hole singles final Shane McGarvey just beat David Norville by 1 in a tense match that finished with both scoring a par on the ninth. The 18-hole final will be contested by Steve Pack and Darren Blackwood or Andy Sale.

Good night and cod bless.

We all know an easy competition is ‘a walk in the park’, but next month you can enjoy a walk in the dark.
Night golf returns to Bradfield on Sunday October 27, with the course illuminated by glowsticks. This was a great success last year and, like last year, the competition will be followed by a fish and chip supper (veggie options available) catered by Off the Scale. You will need to bring your beverage of choice. It is, of course open to all members and a sign-up sheet will be in the clubhouse later this month. Guests are welcome to come for supper.

Texas Scramble Series

Congratulations to Harry Pratt, winner of the men’s season-long Texas Scramble series.
The new competition began last winter, with teams drawn at random once a month from January to September. Each team member counted his best five scores over the nine-match series.
Nothing was decided until the final day, when Harry finished just one point clear.
Commiserations to Darren Blackwood, who would have given Harry a serious run for his money but at the last minute was unable to play in the final round and finished one point behind him, 293-294.

Terry Ronan Memorial Shield

On Saturday October 19, members are invited to play for the Terry Ronan Memorial Shield, a team event to remember the Bradfield College teacher and one of the golf club’s original stalwarts.
The winners will receive the trophy from Terry’s widow, Mrs Sheena Ronan.
The competition will be followed by a ploughman's lunch and you can purchase your drinks on the day from a limited selection of beverages.
This is a mixed event and a sign-up sheet will be posted in the clubhouse soon.

Terry's former colleague Golf Mike Goodwin writes:
Terry was a member of the golf club from its inception, a cheerful character who loved golf and all the different formats in the game that could be played, from strings to stablefords. One evening he suffered a dizzy spell and the news was the worst. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour but he battled through the treatment and continued to play whenever he could find the energy. Sadly he lost his battle and we all lost a kind and thoughtful friend. The Terry Ronan Memorial Shield is our way of remembering him. It is a fun competition, to be played in bright golf attire with all proceeds going towards brain tumour research.
Course News from Head Greenkeeper - Alec Horsburgh
Renovations are going quite well at the moment with hopefully only the fairways remaining. We have kept it simple this year with renovation plans for 2020 being a bit more complex.
As we head into winter, it’s worth remembering the risks when out on the golf course. When it is wet and muddy it becomes very slippery, especially on sloped areas. Worm casts produce a problem with excess mud making it more unstable under foot. Please ensure you wear appropriate shoes with spikes and try to stay off the steeper slopes (e.g. the back of the 8th green surrounds).
As a rule, throughout the whole year, we prefer all trolleys to be kept off the tees and tee surrounds. These are high wear areas which is why we recommend all trolleys are kept at the bottom of the slope to help reduce the damage caused to the turf. Too much traffic means areas become more compacted resulting in rope boundaries or having to put a trolley ban in place, which is something we try to avoid doing. Some tee surrounds are too steep for us to use any machinery to perform repair or renovation work so it all has to be done by hand, which is very time consuming. Please help us trying to keep the surfaces clean by obeying this rule and we will do what we can to minimise any disruption.

Thank you very much.
