Stand Up for Public Health and Safety of Mississippians

MAFP issued a call to action this week to motivate members to call their legislators about the Mississippi Department of Health (DOH). DOH plays a vital role in the public health and safety of all Mississippians. HB 1511 is the appropriations bill for the DOH and currently awaits Senate action. The House's position on the bill was to cut the department's budget by approximately 50% after an $8.17 million reduction in general funds and mandating $9.6 million in payments to the trauma care system, emergency medical services, and domestic violence programs.

What does a cut like this mean for Mississippians? Vital services like regulatory checks of day cares, wastewater, drinking water, restaurants, and nursing homes will be significantly delayed, and Mississippians will be put at risk. Additionally, the DOH manages the spread of disease and other epidemics, and provides preventative health for Mississippians, which, when treated, costs the state less.  The DOH has already made cuts, closed county offices, and reduced employees to compensate for budget reductions; however, this 50% budget cut would be detrimental to the function of the Department of Health and the safety of Mississippians.

Please assist us in advocating for additional funding by contacting Senator Buck Clarke, Appropriations Chairman, Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves, and your Senator and ask each of them to provide the funding needed for the Department of Health to function properly and keep Mississippians safe. Please leave a message for them at 601-359-3770.  Tell them the House did not provide any additional funding to pay the required services for the trauma care system, emergency medical services, and domestic violence programs. The DOH simply cannot function efficiently and safely without the Senate's help.

Call 601-359-3770 and stand up for the public health and safety of Mississippians and encourage the Senate to increase funding for the Department of Health.  We have a waiting room flyer you can use to get your patients to call about this important issue.

Med Students Receive Backpacks
Packed Full of Tar Wars Material

A group of University of Mississippi Medical Center 3rd-year medical students received a backpack of 'Tar Wars' instruction materials Monday from MAFP Foundation's Special Projects Coordinator Jewell Buckley (photo, in back, wearing black). The students each began their 6-week Family Medicine rotation this week. MAFP Foundation gives each medical student the tools they need to teach kids about the dangers of tobacco use, so the medical student can make a 'Tar Wars' presentation to a 4th or 5th grade class during their rotation.  If your area school is interested in having a Tar Wars presentation, please contact Jewell Buckley .

Dr. Mizell, who is Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of Medical Student Clerkship at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, has spoken nationally to physicians on this issue and has developed instruction materials for residents and students.

MAFP Foundation Receives Over 30 Applications for  David G. Hall, MD, Memorial Scholarship

Since 2001, the MAFP Foundation has awarded $48,500 in college scholarship money to deserving high school seniors through the David G. Hall, MD Memorial Scholarship.  This year the MAFP Foundation received a total of 31 applications from 18 schools and 20 cities all over the state of Mississippi.  The applications will be scored on the merit of each student's 500-word essay on the assigned theme and are judged anonymously by a panel of three judges.  Judging this year's essays are the following members of MAFP Foundation's Board of Directors:  Bernadatte Gilbert, MD, P. Brent Smith, MD, and Thais Tonore, MD.  Winners will be announced by April 28.

The David G. Hall Memorial Scholarship fund was created in 2001 in honor and in memory of Dr. David Hall of Natchez.  Hall served in several leadership positions in the MAFP, and was also active at the national level.  Remembered for his numerous accomplishments, the Board of Trustees of the Family Health Foundation of Mississippi (known today as the MAFP Foundation) established the memorial scholarship for high school students interested in pursuing a career in the field of medicine.
