A Message from the Dean...
"It's what you learn after you know it all that counts."
Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel,
and yet you do not understand these things?" - John 3:10

I was once waiting to check out at a grocery store and being served by a young man with a "Manager Trainee" name tag pinned to his chest. The cash register had run out of tape, and this young aspiring manager was trying to change the tape and having a very rough go of it. Finally, he called over to the next register and told that cashier, "Here. Fix this!" and then he stomped off in a huff.
I remember thinking, "Hmm, this young man will not make it as a manager. He should be learning everything and been humble enough to let this cashier actually teach him how to change the cash register tape."
I wonder how that would-be manager could manage without knowing how to change the tape. It's a small thing, but an important thing. It's sort of a building block of knowing how to manage people well.
Nicodemus was like that young manager. He was a teacher of Israel, and Jesus challenged him to know the basics of his faith.
I once invited a parishioner to attend a certain Sunday School class. He replied, "Oh, I don't need to go to Sunday School; I know what I believe."
It was because of his less-than-knowledgeable ideas that I had encouraged him to attend Sunday School in the first place.
How about you? Where are you in your faith journey? John Wooden, legendary basketball coach of the UCLA Bruins-Google him if you don't know who he is-once said, "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts."
Another great coach, Lou Holtz, once said, "In this world you're either growing or you're dying."
So, which are you doing in your Christian life: growing or dying?

Staff Updates

Fr. David Miller will be leaving the staff at the end of April. He will be serving as a supply priest in the diocese as he further discerns what God has next for him. We will host a reception for him, Keeley, and the boys at the end of April to bid them goodbye and to express our love and appreciation for them.

Our Sexton, Larry Budgewater, left the staff on February 28. He will remain in the Sexton's house through the month of March. Meanwhile, we want to welcome our new Sexton, James Pena (spelled PENA but pronounced PENYA). James lives in the neighborhood and has done work for Cathedral Arts and Lucy Creech. He is also a Navy veteran. Introduce yourself to James and welcome him aboard.

Varita Michell has returned to the staff in a part-time, unpaid, position as director of Welcoming Ministries. We are pleased to have her in this position bringing her energy and passion to helping St. Matthew's be a welcoming place.
