Small-Great Objects: Anni and Josef Albers in the Americas at The Yale University Art Gallery
in New Haven, Connecticut through June 18
"Homage to the Square: Festive" by Josef Albers
The Yale University Art Gallery presents Small-Great Objects: Anni and Josef Albers in America. On view now through June 18, the exhibit closely examines the intersections between making art and collection art for Anni and Josef Albers. The AlbersAnni and Josef Albers traveled to Latin America and spent much of their time in Mexico and Peru. The couple collected a large collection of artworks from the region including ancient and modern works. Small-Great Objects examines these works in a greater depth and considers how their collection influenced their teaching and their own work. In addition to the work that the Albers collected, the exhibition features dozens of their own works, including textiles, paintings, works on paper and photographs. The artists uses a variety of mediums including oil on masonite, gouache on blueprint graph paper, cotton and rayon, wood, ceramic with pigment and even household items including a drain strainer and paper clips. The couple spent much of their time at archaeological sites, museums and local spots and created a body of work that encompassed different social and economic status. Small-Great Works is on view at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut now through June 18. For more information, click here.

Vermont College of Fine Arts offers free portfolio reviews

The MFA in Visual Art program at Vermont College of Fine Arts is offering a free portfolio review for all artists interested in applying or looking for feedback. Artists should submit 10 images and an artist statement. Faculty members will give comments on specific pieces and on each portfolio. The submission period will run from March 6-17, 2017. A Curious Nature at The Fitchburg Art Museum
in Fitchburg, Massachusetts through June 4

The Fitchburg Art Museum presents artist Shelley Reed in their current exhibition A Curious Nature. With artworks spanning from a decade ago to works that have never been seen by the public, A Curious Nature provides viewers with insight into the artist and her transformation throughout the years. The exhibition features a variety of works including black and white canvasses and oils on paper. Her subject matter ranges from large scale scenes with animal and botanical details and more intimate portraits or moments of pause as shown in her Tiger and On the Wall (after Hondecoeter) details. Reed also includes several predator/prey images, detailing the stalking, contemplation, and attacking of these beings while encouraging the audience to contemplate who is watching whom both in the artworks themselves and the inspiration Reed worked from. Her works are not only distinct in subject matter, but in technique as well. Using a black and white palette exclusively, the viewer is able to focus almost entirely on the scenery and subjects and the emotion of the subject that is so intense in many of the works. A Curious Nature is organized by Curator Mary M. Tinti and Interim Curator Lisa Crossman and is on view at the Fitchburg Art Museum now through June 4. In addition to a Gallery Talk with Shelley Reed on Sunday, April 30, there will be a Curator's Tour with Lisa Crossman on Thursday, April 6. For more information, click here.

Wyeth Wonderland at The Hudson River Museum
in Yonkers, New York through May 14
"Rubber Ivy" by Joséphine Douet
The Hudson River Museum hosts a unique exhibition featuring works by artist Joséphine Douet. Wyeth Wonderland is an interesting culmination of both Douet and American painter Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) and displays the similarities and differences within the works. Both inspired by Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania landscapes and people, the artists have similar styles and subject matters despite entirely different experiences. The exhibition features twelve drawings and watercolors by artist Andrew Wyeth paired with Douet's own photographs to compose the Wyeth Wonderland series. While some of the comparisons are direct, such as portrait of the same individual only years later, much of the works are similar in the tone, aesthetic or emotion they evoke. Aesthetic synergy was a large component for Douet when choosing which of Wyeth's images to pair with her own. Though Douet is originally from France and is currently based in Madrid, Spain, she was eager to travel to Wyeth's hometown and immerse herself not only in her photographic work, but in the childhood home of an artist she greatly admired. Douet notes, "My decision to follow in Wyeth's footsteps and to photograph what he painted and his relationship with his home arose from a combination of my admiration for him and my love for artistic challenge." Wyeth Wonderland is on view at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, New York through May 14. Rosen rose to prominence beginning in the late 1950s. For the last 40-plus years, however, he has focused on his role as teacher (Bennington College, 1960-91) and maker, rarely exhibiting or publishing his work. This exhibition establishes Rosen's place among the masters of 20th- and 21st-century American ceramics, as it presents a selection from his unique, evocative body of abstract ceramic sculpture. The Brookline Arts Center is pleased to present Up/Rooted, a national exhibition juried by renowned Cuban-born artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons. Up/Rooted explores origin, displacement and the influence of the past on the future. This timely exhibition examines how culture and identity relate to our sense of place. Up/Rooted is a diverse exhibition of 59 artists showcasing work in painting, sculpture, mixed media, photography, charcoal, glass, monoprint and more.
A public reception will be held Friday, March 17 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Brookline Arts Center.
