The Northeast is enjoying a bit of a reprieve with unseasonably warm temperatures. It's a welcome relief, even if it's temporary, after being belted with snow that felt like it wasn't going to end. There are probably lots of things that you could be doing during these spring-like days, and I'm willing to guess that spring cleaning and organizng may be among the popular ideas. With spring cleaning and organizing often comes purging, and you'll need to have a ready resource to accept your cast-offs.

    Doing Good by Donating

Now that you're in the mood to spring clean and organize, start purging the easy stuff. The expired, broken, ripped, outdated, unflattering, dust-covered-because-you-haven't-looked-at-it-in-years, and the plain old don't-like-it, don't-want-it or don't- need-it stuff. You may be surprised at how quickly bags and boxes will fill up. Now all you need to do is get them out the door - quickly. So before you begin, have a plan and know where your purges are going. One of the common mantras I hear is people wanting to know that their stuff is going to a good home, and where it will do the most good. There are lots of donation outlets that fit this bill. They are eager to collect your goods and help those truly in need. Look into organizations that align with your values, and you'll do good by donating.
Donating with a Cause
Are you an animal lover? Your unwanted sheets and towels may be welcomed by a local animal shelter. Find an MSPCA location where your donations can be accepted.

In honor of a family member who was a veteran, you may want to consider  donating clothing, household items or even a car to a group like the Vietnam Veterans of America, one of several that picks up at your door.

Passionate about helping kids? Get rid of books, CDs and DVDs through  More Than Words, an organization that transforms the lives of kids who are in foster care, the court system or who are homeless.

If you have gently used home goods, appliances, building materials or furniture, Habitat for Humanity's  ReStore uses the money raised from the sale of these items to help families in need build an affordable place to call home.
The list of donation outlets is endless, and these are just a few ideas to get you thinking about where your stuff may do the most good and be meaningful to you. It always feels good to donate, and the extra reward may be more space in your closets and drawers, the attic or basement. Get going and donate!
