Hello CASCers!

Shout out to everyone that was able to stop by the So Cool So (SCSJ) Just Organization Fair! A special thanks to our partners the Ginsberg Center , and the Office of Community-Engaged Academic Learning . The fair was first e stablished by CASC Minor students in SW 305 six years prior, the fair provides a space for organizations to connect with students, build community with other social justice organizations, and share activities and programs, campus wide. This year, 32 student organizations, student life and academic departments participated in the fair by sharing resources to new students and establishing partnerships in the spirit of fostering social change on campus and in community. Thank you for choosing to be a part of this community!

Preferred Admissions
Declared CASC students are eligible to apply to the MSW preferred admissions program.To learn more, go to  Preferred Admissions  or contact the Office of Student Services at (734) 936-0961 to schedule a phone or in-person appointment. Additionally, prospective applicants are required to complete an  info form ,  prior to submitting a preferred admissions application.
Poverty Solutions Certificate  
Are you interested in the Poverty Solutions Certificate? Schedule an appointment or drop by the CASC office during academic advising. Information on the requirements can be found on the  CASC Minor website .  For more information about the Poverty Solutions Center, visit  poverty.umich.edu .

Ruth Leonela Buentello’s "zero tolerance" series portrays the experience of migrant families being separated and detained at the U.S.-Mexico border. Her work is view at the U-M Institute for the Humanities gallery starting Sept. 19. 
Detroit School Series

Join the Detroit School Series for the 2019-2020 school year kick-off lecture, proudly hosted in Detroit! This year, speakers will interrogate and reimagine the theme: Egalitarian Detroit. In this first lecture, Branden Snyder, Executive Director of Detroit Action (formerly Good Jobs Now) will construct a radical vision of Detroit's future that re-centers the legacy of Black culture and history in economic and urban development of the city. Come learn about what community organizing is, the state of affairs in Michigan and how communities are using policy and electoral organizing to change their neighborhoods.

Gone to the Village Screening
Friday, September 20th, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Nana Afia Kobi was 111 years old when she passed away on November 14, 2016. She served Asanteman and Ghana for 39 years. Gone to the Village captures the collective mourning and the performed history of Asante in contemporary Ghana. It is a multifaceted and multidirectional documentary that chronicles the fusion of oral traditions, political authority and national unity with the visual, musical and performative arts of Asante.
Fate in our Stars Screening
Presented by Give Merit , a Detroit-based nonprofit, FATE in our Stars is a student-led community event designed to showcase the dreams of Detroit youth. Students organized this event with the goal of empowering their peers in their community to aspire and achieve their dreams. Watch Now: FATE In Our Stars Event Commercial

FATE In Our Stars will take place on Saturday, September 21st in the parking lot of Straight Gate International Church in Detroit. It will be a fun filled-event for people of all ages, with events including live music, a youth shark tank competition, and a celebrity basketball game. All proceeds from the event will go toward funding youth scholarships, as well as supporting Give Merit and its initiatives. 
Spectrum Center's BiBQ
Join us for the  Bi-B-Q on September 23 from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m.  at the Trotter Multicultural Center (428 State St) to celebrate the bi, pan, ply, fluid, and non-monosexual communities with food, fun, and resources. There will also be chalking in the Diag and button-making.

Rebeca Ontiveros from Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC) shared the updated version of "An Undocumented Student Guide to College in Michigan!" The update is the result of a partnership between the National Forum, The Michigan College Access Network (MCAN), OneMichigan, and MIRC.
Opportunities
Hiring for Design Lab Interns
The U-M Library's  Shapiro Design Lab , an ever-evolving experimental space focused on peer learning, engaged learning, and interdisciplinary. Design Lab Interns are undergraduate students who will help run the Lab on a day-to-day basis, participating in the broader learning communities of the Lab, and take on leadership roles to help grow the Lab with their own expertise, ideas, and passions. Engagement Fellows
The U-M Library Student Engagement Program is reaching out to share some exciting engaged learning opportunities. We are currently recruiting both undergraduate and graduate students for leadership roles in projects that focus on libraries, research, and information.

As  Engagement Fellows , students will have the chance to enhance their professional skills, build new connections, and gain hands-on experience in a vibrant and diverse learning environment. Individual project descriptions can be found  here . All Fellows work in teams of 2 for 8 hours/week at $12/hour. Applications can be found  here  and are due 9/23.

Join FATE
Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity that engages youth in Detroit? If so, Give Merit’s mentorship program, FATE , is looking for University of Michigan students to become mentors!  

FATE is a four-year, cohort-based program for high school students in Detroit who attend the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy. Its mission is to provide resources and opportunities for underserved youth to embrace education and become world-class citizens, with a goal to motivate each student to graduate high school and attend college. If you are interested in mentoring for the FATE Program during the 2019-2020 academic year, email Rachel Mazzaro at rmazzaro@umich.edu for more information!
