What's Happening This Week in
Downtown Jamaica
Jamaica Center BID at the 3rd Annual Sutphin Boulevard Harvest Festival

Recently the BID's Executive Director, Jennifer Furioli, joined a panel discussion with Executive Directors of our neighboring BIDs, Glenn Greenidge of the Sutphin Boulevard BID and Derek Irby of the 165th Street BID, to discuss the positive impact that BIDs have throughout NYC and the Queens Borough, particularly in Downtown Jamaica.

The panel was facilitated by Pauline Swift from the Our World Hour of Power Show . Back in August Jennifer and our Director of Marketing and Business Services Trey Jenkins sat with Pauline to deep dive into our BID's programming. If you missed it, watch or listen here .

Special thanks to Glenn and the Sutphin Boulevard BID for having us at their great event!
Say Cheese!

You may have seen our team walking around Jamaica Avenue the other day with a photographer. We were busy snapping shots of Jamaica Avenue’s many attractions, including, but not limited to new and existing retail and restaurants: Snipes , Make Me Over Beauty Bar , H&M , El Rincon, Parsons Public Space and the beautiful farmers market, and cultural facilities like King Manor Museum and JCAL to name a few. You’ll likely see many of these pictures in our upcoming marketing materials, but we couldn’t resist flaunting a couple of cute ones captured of our local businesses: Raymour and Flanigan , Jackie’s Kids, Café Energy, Snipes and Make Me Over Beauty Bar.
Construction Begins at 160-05 Archer Avenue

Work at Shorewood Real Estate Group’s 160-05 Archer Avenue has begun, marked by a groundbreaking on September 5. This exciting mixed-use development next to our BID and just south of the building housing Burlington and Chipotle will feature hundreds of apartments and ground floor retail, further contributing to the vibrancy of the Jamaica Avenue retail corridor and our diverse and friendly residential community. We look forward to welcoming these future residents to the neighborhood and introducing them to all that Downtown Jamaica and the Jamaica Avenue BID has to offer.
Raymour & Flanigan Hosted a Finger Paint & Sip Event!

Last Wednesday, Raymour & Flanigan (168-23 Jamaica Avenue) hosted their first kids Finger Paint & Sip event where they could paint artwork and enjoy snacks and refreshments. All proceeds benefited the Boys & Girls Club.

Congrats to Raymour & Flanigan for a successful event!

The Artist Commissioning Program
application is now live!

The Artist Commissioning Program (ACP) awards Queens-based choreographers, playwrights, and composers $10,000 each towards the creation of a new, original work that tells an untold story relevant to two Queens neighborhoods. For the 2019-20 ACP cycle, the two neighborhoods of focus are Flushing and Maspeth/Ridgewood.

This program democratizes the traditional commissioning process, which has historically been reserved for a privileged few, by enabling local arts appreciators, or Art Commissioners, to commission new culture.

Art Commissioners apply by October 17. Artists apply by November 14.
Electronic Waste Pickup Begins!

Starting October 1, 2019, Bronx and Eastern Queens residents can make an appointment to have their electronic waste picked up by the NYC Department of Sanitation .

Electronics include items covered by NYS law. Appliances that are mostly metal or plastic that are not on this list, should be recycled with metal, glass, plastic and cartons.

Hard copies of these flyers will be delivered to your office in the coming weeks.

To schedule a pick-up, residents can visit the link below or call 311.
