Action on payment

The Alberta Trade Contractors Coalition is ramping up efforts to have governments hold construction owners, general contractors and contractors accountable for paying on time.

Alberta Infrastructure has led the way by adopting prompt payment protocols however, on an annual basis, less than 10 per cent of Alberta's construction projects are publicly funded.

It is now time to take the next step toward legislated payment timelines. Review ATCC's ten point recommended requirements of Prompt Payment Legislation.

Member meetings

This month we had a great turn out for both Calgary and Edmonton's meetings on marijuana and workplace safety. We had Lori Brienza and Loretta Bouwmeester from Mathews Dinsdale and Clark LLP, who provided us with information on what the current legal landscape looks like and what the implications of legalizing recreational marijuana will have for employers.

There are certainly a lot more questions than there are answers for some of these issues. However, the main take-away is that you should have a drug and alcohol policy, and communicate it with your employees. Employers need to know your duty to accommodate and educate employees on being fit for duty. They also mentioned that having in place an employee assistance program will help.

Education and Training
MCA is here to help your career

MCA Alberta offers education and training programs through a variety of learning opportunities that are designed to meet unique mechanical and service contractor needs. This is accomplished through member meetings featuring guest presenters on broad industry topics, product specific technical training, soft stills training to address broader HR, business planning and succession planning.

These programs are designed for owners and senior management, service managers and technicians, HR leaders, frontline field, and office staff to keep you current and grow your career.
Product specific training

MCA introduced product specific training in February and received great feedback from our service technicians who attended. February's training was full of useful information on trouble shooting and installing hot water tanks and tankless units which is applicable to a wide variety of units on the market.

Thank you, Allan Forrest Sales Ltd., for hosting and AO Smith, for putting on a fantastic training class.  March's sold out course will focus on trouble shooting boiler controls, understanding boiler staging controls, sensor wiring, and testing, plus much more.

These courses fill up fast so don't miss April's course on pumps. Please let us know what other products you would like to see the MCA offer training on, so we can continue to add dates to the schedule. If you are a supplier and have a product that you think would work in this format, please contact the office.
Dispatcher training

A contracting firm's dispatchers serve as the nerve center of the entire company. The more knowledgeable and capable they are at serving customers and communicating with field personnel, the better they can contribute to the success of the business.

Join the MCA for training designed to enhance your dispatcher's skill set through group exercises, self-assessment tools and discussion groups. For all information click here.

Have your say in the hydronic heating systems  requirements

The recently enacted National Model Energy Code for Buildings includes significant insulation requirements for subfloor radiant heating.

Since the code became live on November 1, many members have seen a significant impact on the demand for hydronic heating installations, especially in the province of Alberta. As a result the Canadian Hydronics Council is actively seeking to facilitate a change in the requirements which are making energy efficient hydronic heating systems, look uncompetitive with alternatives in terms of initial investment costs.

World Plumbing Day

MCA encourages you to participate in the promotion of this day that is dedicated to the plumbing industry by downloading this brochure with more information.
World Water Day

Each year on March 22, World Water Day spreads awareness on taking action to tackle the water crisis.

Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to their homes, making them spend countless hours queuing or trekking to distant sources, and coping with the health impacts of using contaminated water.
