Summer 2015

Summer 2015

It is truly amazing that each year seems to be going by faster and faster!  It used to be 'where did the time go' as in hours or even days.  Now it is becoming 'where did the years go' but I guess this comes with getting older.

Since we are in a hurry, I will keep this short and sweet.  We recently passed out a large number of our re-usable tote bags.  These bags are great for the market, the beach, a picnic or just about any other activity that requires you to carry something.  So besides helping to make your life easier and our environment cleaner (and also saving 5 cents off at the grocery store) we are once again running our CEDARWOOD LANDSCAPING TOTE BAG CONTEST.  Same rules as in the past:

Submit a picture of you or someone you know with the bag, or even just the bag on it's own, in a fun and cool place making sure to show the Cedarwood Landscaping logo.  It might be somewhere exotic where you may be spending your vacation, maybe somewhere local or even in your own back yard.  Our judges will be on the lookout for unusual, interesting and fun locations, and will pick a winner to receive a lovely tree which will be professionally installed by Cedarwood Landscaping!

Our past winner was Mr. Anthony Wahl of Mendham, N.J.  His tote bag made it all the way to the middle east region (Turkey)!

Please send us your pictures before November 1st and hopefully you will be the lucky recipient of a really nice tree.  If you have not yet received a tote bag, please contact us and we will do our best to get it to you as soon as we can.  B est of luck to everyone and thank you, as always, for your continued patronage!

Sincerely,

J. Scott Mortensen, APLD

Tips for Hot & Dry Summer Weather

With the shutoff of recent rainfall, Summer seems to have returned with a bang! Let's work together by helping to minimize our use of water, pesticides and other chemicals by keeping our plants healthy and happy throughout the season.

Mulch

First, make sure you have an adequate layer of mulch, which should typically be about 1 to 3" in depth, depending upon the plant and its location.  Mulch is a rather generic term and can be anything from hay and fallen leaves, to classic wood chips as well as typical shredded products.  Even old newspaper can be used, usually on a short term basis for this type of use.  The mulch helps do a lot of great things for your plants but for now we will think of it as helping to absorb and retain water.

Watering

Regarding watering, usually it is best to provide long soakings rather than frequent, light  watering.  Your goal should be to ensure the plant gets about 1" of water per week, either from you or the skies above.  The best way to measure this is by using a rain gauge.  If not, use the tried and true finger method.  Stick your finger in the ground at the base of the plant and if it comes out sticky from the soil the moisture is usually fine.  If it comes out like talcum powder it's time for a good soaking.

Remember the best time to water is early in the morning (4:00-9:00 am) as it is the most efficient use of water and helps keep disease away.  If you must water another time, try late afternoon or early evening and do your best to keep the leaves dry.

Monitor Plant Material

Pay careful attention to recently installed plant material which is basically anything installed within the last three years, including trees.  Special attention should be given to any plants that were damaged by recent fall snowstorms as well as this season's late frost, which delayed bud break.  As these plant materials are essentially "playing catch-up" we should minimize any further stress to them.  Additional signs of stress are dropping or drooping leaves and needles.  Damage usually occurs from the top down.

Turf

Turf grass in our area has been going dormant due to the dry, arid weather conditions.  Although the browning out is not pretty to look at, it is best to let nature take it's course and the turf should bounce back once the precipitation returns to normal amounts.
