Help Us Send 100 Mahouts to EAI Foot Trimming Workshops!
Think of a pebble thrown into a still pond. What happens? It creates ripples that spread far beyond its small size.
Now imagine that 100 mahouts could attend EAI's foot trimming workshops in Nepal this November. They will return home with new knowledge and skills, ready to teach other mahouts what they've learned. Think of the ripples of change that would cause.
Our goal is to have sponsors for 100 mahouts. We're already halfway there - thank you!
But we need your help to reach our goal.
Your $50 sponsorshipwill cover a mahout's room and board during the workshop, transportation to and from, a set of foot trimming tools to keep, hands-on instruction and a small stipend.
We invite all interested professionals to
apply for the workshopsas well. Join EAI founder and CEO Carol Buckley for hands-on training in elephant foot care. As one of the world's foremost authorities on captive elephants, Carol will share her extensive knowledge and provide personalized instruction.
You can apply for either or both of our two 2019 Nepal foot trimming workshops:

Carol Creates Guidelines for New Elephant Sanctuary in Myanmar
Export bans and logging restrictions in Myanmar have created a crisis for 1,000+ captive elephants, who are now unemployed. Many have been killed or sold into the tourism trade.
FOUR PAWS is creating an elephant sanctuary and release program in the Bago region of Myanmar to give some of the elephants a new home. FOUR PAWS asked EAI founder and CEO Carol Buckley to create rehabilitation and release guidelines, which put the elephants' needs first.
The scorching heat of summer is giving way to cooler temperatures, creating ideal conditions for work on the grounds of Elephant Refuge North America (ERNA). Sign up to volunteer and help us complete this beautiful new elephant refuge.

EAI Advisory Council Member Helps Score Win for Elephants at CITES
In a major win, the United Nations wildlife trade organization CITES last month imposed strict limits on the export of wild-caught African elephants to zoos and other captive facilities. Dr. Keith Lindsay, an EAI Advisory Council member, provided backup to the countries that supported the limits.
Dr. Lindsay also spoke at an
international conference of elephant experts earlier this month. He joined other speakers in calling for an end to elephants in captivity. The conference also called for zoos to release elephants and reintegrate them into the wild or relocate them to sanctuaries where they can live a more normal life.
"[Elephants are] a keystone species, essential components in an ecosystem," Lindsay stated. "If you take the keystone out of an arch it collapses. They're ecological engineers upon which many other species depend. They bring down trees to browse level, they open paths in the forest, they find salt licks, they open space for grazers and disperse seeds. The wild is where they belong."
As always, we greatly appreciate your interest, commitment and help. We would not be able to do any of this work without your continued support.
