Senate holds first Farm Bill field hearing
The Senate Agriculture Committee held its first Farm Bill field hearing on February 23rd on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, Kansas.  The committee heard testimony from 21 witnesses across three panels.  Animal agriculture was represented by dairy, beef and pork producers and several of the witnesses from production agriculture mentioned the importance of agricultural research.  In addition, witnesses from the beef and pork industries discussed the importance of developing a foot and mouth disease vaccine bank and supporting efforts to strengthen science-based programs to help prevent and mitigate impacts of animal disease.

The hearing represents the beginning of the 2018 Farm Bill process in the Senate, with many more hearings to come.

The House has also initiated hearings and is beginning its preparations for the next Farm Bill.  More information on the Senate field hearing, including a full witness list and testimony can be found

USDA Ag Outlook: Farm economy sentiment improving
Financial conditions in 2016 had many agricultural economists concerned about projected trends and the financial health of farm country. However, the resilience in the countryside has revealed a more moderate financial scenario that shows there are some bright spots, U.S. Department of Agriculture chief economist Rob Johansson told the 93rd annual USDA Outlook Forum.

"I think 2016 was much better than I thought it would be," Johansson said. "When looking at farm income numbers last year at this time, I think (USDA) had projected lower farm income than we ended up with. Farmers were able to cut costs more than we thought."

Johansson said South America was expected to have a good crop last year, but in actuality, its production output slipped, providing more support for the U.S. price floor when domestic production soared.

Systemic review of salmonellosis calls for farm-to-fork research
A team of interdisciplinary scientists at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and the Charleston VA Medical Center Research Service recently reviewed published literature for evidence of a relationship between antibiotic use in agricultural animals and drug-resistant foodborne salmonella infections in people, commonly known as salmonellosis.
Corn, milk proteins make medicine easier to swallow
Developing medications for children can be challenging because taste and texture are important, but safety is also a major concern, according to pharmaceutical sciences professor Om Perumal at South Dakota State University.
As co-founder and chief scientific officer of Tranzderm Solutions, he is adapting his corn protein-based drug delivery method to oral pediatric formulations.

ADSA® Foundation to honor graduate students
New literature review awards recognize excellence in dissertation writing
Champaign, IL, February 23, 2017 - Work done by graduate students, from assisting in the laboratory to authoring manuscripts, is invaluable to scientific research. For many students, an extensive literature review is part of the thesis or dissertation required to graduate. These reviews offer in-depth summaries of the literature and could be a great benefit to other researchers. Often, though, these reviews are not widely available.
"Many reviews never get published as journal articles and go unnoticed," Michael T. Socha, PhD, chair of the American Dairy Science Association® Foundation, said. "This led to the idea of an annual contest for graduate student review papers, where the ADSA Foundation could acknowledge excellent work and help publicize literature reviews that might otherwise go unseen."
The ADSA Foundation Graduate Student Literature Review Awards will annually recognize the work of four graduate students-two doctoral candidates and two master's candidates-in two categories, dairy foods and dairy production. Within six months of successful thesis defense, graduate students should submit literature reviews to the Journal of Dairy Science®. These reviews will undergo standard, blinded peer review and be published as Invited Reviews, with page charges waived. All reviews that are accepted via the regular peer review process will be published in the journal, not just the award-winning reviews.
Reviews accepted within the previous two years will be considered for the award. The ADSA Foundation expects to present the first Graduate Student Literature Review Awards in 2019, meaning all literature reviews accepted between January 2017 and January 2019 would be eligible for awards. From the submitted reviews, a panel of judges will select the best and the winners will receive a plaque and a $1,000 cash prize.
The inclusion of more high-quality review papers will be a benefit to the Journal of Dairy Science, as reviews positively affect the journal's Impact Factor. Publication will benefit the graduate students, as it allows them to add to their number of publications and increase their name recognition.
"These awards advance the mission of the ADSA Foundation and further promote the high-quality work done by graduate students worldwide," said Socha. "We look forward to recognizing our graduate students with these awards."

ADSA Joins in Asking for no further cuts for Ag Programs
ADSA recently joined with over 500 other agriculture and foods related organizations in a letter to Congressional leaders urging that no additional cuts be made to policies within the jurisdiction of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry or the House Committee on Agriculture. The letter noted that the bipartisan 2014 Farm Bill made a significant contribution to deficit reduction. It was estimated to contribute $23 billion to deficit reduction over 10 years at the time of passage. In fact the savings have been even greater. According to the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) January 2017 baseline estimates nutrition and crop insurance alone will spend nearly $100 billion less, while mandatory federal spending outside the Agriculture Committees' jurisdiction has risen over the same time period. (Click here for the full letter.)

You can Still Become a Sponsor of the Large Dairy Herd Management
(3rd edition, e-book)
Nonprofit organizations, companies, and individuals are invited to take advantage of the opportunity to sponsor one or more of the remaining available sections of the Large Dairy Herd Management (LDHM) e-book currently in development. Sponsors will receive recognition for a three-year period as the e-book is used throughout the dairy industry worldwide. The ADSA® Foundation is publishing this extensively revised and updated edition of the book in early 2017.
The third edition (98 chapters) will be available in e-book format (designed to allow for convenient updating) with completely new content. It will be sold at ADSA member, nonmember, and student rates and distributed directly by ADSA.
Anticipated users of the e-book include dairy management professionals, progressive producers, extension educators, consultants, upper-level university students studying dairy science and management, and allied industry representatives. The book is written in a practical application style but reflects the scientific rigor of the Journal of Dairy Science®.
As an e-book sponsor, you will receive international recognition for supporting the delivery of up-to-date, peer-reviewed dairy management information to the global dairy industry. Initial e-book section sponsors will have right of first refusal to renew after the initial three-year period of recognition. DON'T WAIT! There are only a limited number of sections available and sponsorship needs to be confirmed prior to publication.   For information on sponsorship and the worldwide recognition it will bring, please contact Larry Miller at largedairyherdmanagement@adsa.org
