Never Forget
The Only Plane in the Sky by Garrett M. Graff

The first comprehensive oral history of September 11, 2001—a panoramic narrative woven from the voices of Americans on the front lines of an unprecedented national trauma

Over the past eighteen years, monumental literature has been published about 9/11, from Lawrence Wright’s  The Looming Tower , which traced the birth and rise of al-Qaeda, to  The 9/11 Commission Report , the government’s definitive factual retrospective of the attacks. But one perspective has been missing up to this point—a 360-degree account of the day told through the voices of the people who experienced it.

Now, in  The Only Plane in the Sky , award-winning journalist and bestselling historian Garrett Graff tells the story of the day as it was  lived —in the words of those who lived it. Drawing on never-before-published transcripts, recently declassified documents, original interviews, and oral histories from nearly five hundred government officials, first responders, witnesses, survivors, friends, and family members, Graff paints the most vivid and human portrait of the September 11 attacks yet.

It begins in the predawn hours of airports in the Northeast, where we meet the ticket agents who unknowingly usher terrorists onto their flights, and then the flight attendants inside the hijacked planes themselves. In New York City, first responders confront a scene of unimaginable horror at the Twin Towers. From a secret bunker underneath the White House, Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice watch for incoming planes on radar. Aboard the small number of unarmed fighter jets in the air, pilots make a pact to fly into a hijacked airliner if necessary to stop it from reaching its target. In the skies above Pennsylvania, civilians aboard United Flight 93 make the ultimate sacrifice in their place. Then, as the day moves forward and flights are grounded across the country, Air Force One circles the nation alone, its passengers isolated and afraid.

More than simply a collection of eyewitness testimonies,  The Only Plane in the Sky  is the historic narrative of how ordinary people grappled with extraordinary events in real time: the father and son working on separate floors in the North Tower, caught on different ends of the impact zone; the firefighter who rushes to the scene to search for his wife who works at the World Trade Center; the operator of in-flight telephone calls who keeps her promise to share a passenger’s last words with his family; the beloved FDNY chaplain who stays on the scene to perform last rites for the dying, losing his own life when the Towers collapse; and the generals at the Pentagon who break down and weep when they are barred from rushing into the burning building to try to rescue their colleagues.

At once a powerful tribute to the courage of everyday Americans and an essential addition to the literature of 9/11,  The Only Plane in the Sky  weaves together the unforgettable personal experiences of the men and women who found themselves caught at the center of an unprecedented human drama. The result is a unique, profound, and searing exploration of humanity on a day that changed the course of history, and all of our lives.

Fiction
The Institute by Stephen King

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis’s parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there’s no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents—telekinesis and telepathy—who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and ten-year-old Avery Dixon. They are all in Front Half. Others, Luke learns, graduated to Back Half, “like the roach motel,” Kalisha says. “You check in, but you don’t check out.”

In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. If you don’t, punishment is brutal. As each new victim disappears to Back Half, Luke becomes more and more desperate to get out and get help. But no one has ever escaped from the Institute.

As psychically terrifying as  Firestarter,  and with the spectacular kid power of  It The Institute  is Stephen King’s gut-wrenchingly dramatic story of good vs. evil in a world where the good guys don’t always win.

The Glass Ocean by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, and Karen White

From the  New York Times  bestselling authors of  The Forgotten Room  comes a captivating historical mystery, infused with romance, that links the lives of three women across a century—two deep in the past, one in the present—to the doomed passenger liner, RMS  Lusitania .

May 2013

Her finances are in dire straits and bestselling author Sarah Blake is struggling to find a big idea for her next book. Desperate, she breaks the one promise she made to her Alzheimer’s-stricken mother and opens an old chest that belonged to her great-grandfather, who died when the RMS  Lusitania  was sunk by a German U-Boat in 1915. What she discovers there could change history. Sarah embarks on an ambitious journey to England to enlist the help of John Langford, a recently disgraced Member of Parliament whose family archives might contain the only key to the long-ago catastrophe. . . .

April 1915

Southern belle Caroline Telfair Hochstetter’s marriage is in crisis. Her formerly attentive industrialist husband, Gilbert, has become remote, pre-occupied with business . . . and something else that she can’t quite put a finger on. She’s hoping a trip to London in  Lusitania ’s lavish first-class accommodations will help them reconnect—but she can’t ignore the spark she feels for her old friend, Robert Langford, who turns out to be on the same voyage. Feeling restless and longing for a different existence, Caroline is determined to stop being a bystander, and take charge of her own life. . . .

Tessa Fairweather is traveling second-class on the  Lusitania , returning home to Devon. Or at least, that’s her story. Tessa has never left the United States and her English accent is a hasty fake. She’s really Tennessee Schaff, the daughter of a roving con man, and she can steal and forge just about anything. But she’s had enough. Her partner has promised that if they can pull off this one last heist aboard the  Lusitania,  they’ll finally leave the game behind. Tess desperately wants to believe that, but Tess has the uneasy feeling there’s something about this job that isn’t as it seems. . . .

As the  Lusitania  steams toward its fate, three women work against time to unravel a plot that will change the course of their own lives . . . and history itself.

The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott

A thrilling tale of secretaries turned spies, of love and duty, and of sacrifice—inspired by the true story of the CIA plot to infiltrate the hearts and minds of Soviet Russia, not with propaganda, but with the greatest love story of the twentieth century:  Doctor Zhivago .

At the height of the Cold War, two secretaries are pulled out of the typing pool at the CIA and given the assignment of a lifetime. Their mission: to smuggle  Doctor Zhivago  out of the USSR, where no one dare publish it, and help Pasternak's magnum opus make its way into print around the world. Glamorous and sophisticated Sally Forrester is a seasoned spy who has honed her gift for deceit all over the world—using her magnetism and charm to pry secrets out of powerful men. Irina is a complete novice, and under Sally's tutelage quickly learns how to blend in, make drops, and invisibly ferry classified documents.

The Secrets We Kept  combines a legendary literary love story—the decades-long affair between Pasternak and his mistress and muse, Olga Ivinskaya, who was sent to the Gulag and inspired Zhivago's heroine, Lara—with a narrative about two women empowered to lead lives of extraordinary intrigue and risk. From Pasternak's country estate outside Moscow to the brutalities of the Gulag, from Washington, D.C. to Paris and Milan,  The Secrets We Kept  captures a watershed moment in the history of literature—told with soaring emotional intensity and captivating historical detail. And at the center of this unforgettable debut is the powerful belief that a piece of art can change the world.

A Better Man by Louise Penny (signed copies available)

Catastrophic spring flooding, blistering attacks in the media, and a mysterious disappearance greet Chief Inspector Armand Gamache as he returns to the Sûreté du Québec in the latest novel by #1  New York Times  bestselling author Louise Penny.

It’s Gamache’s first day back as head of the homicide department, a job he temporarily shares with his previous second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir. Flood waters are rising across the province. In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter.

As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned. But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father.

Increasingly hounded by the question,  how would you feel …, he resumes the search.

As the rivers rise, and the social media onslaught against Gamache becomes crueler, a body is discovered. And in the tumult, mistakes are made.
In the next novel in this “constantly surprising series that deepens and darkens as it evolves” ( New York Times Book Review ), Gamache must face a horrific possibility, and a burning question.

What would you do if your child’s killer walked free?

The Last Train to London by Meg Waite Clayton

The  New York Times  bestselling author of  Beautiful Exiles  conjures her best novel yet, a pre-World War II-era story with the emotional resonance of  Orphan Train  and  All the Light We Cannot See , centering on the  Kindertransports  that carried thousands of children out of Nazi-occupied Europe—and one brave woman who helped them escape to safety.

In 1936, the Nazi are little more than loud, brutish bores to fifteen-year old Stephan Neuman, the son of a wealthy and influential Jewish family and budding playwright whose playground extends from Vienna’s streets to its intricate underground tunnels. Stephan’s best friend and companion is the brilliant Žofie-Helene, a Christian girl whose mother edits a progressive, anti-Nazi newspaper. But the two adolescents’ carefree innocence is shattered when the Nazis’ take control.

There is hope in the darkness, though. Truus Wijsmuller, a member of the Dutch resistance, risks her life smuggling Jewish children out of Nazi Germany to the nations that will take them. It is a mission that becomes even more dangerous after the Anschluss—Hitler’s annexation of Austria—as, across Europe, countries close their borders to the growing number of refugees desperate to escape.

Tante Truus, as she is known, is determined to save as many children as she can. After Britain passes a measure to take in at-risk child refugees from the German Reich, she dares to approach Adolf Eichmann, the man who would later help devise the “Final Solution to the Jewish Question,” in a race against time to bring children like Stephan, his young brother Walter, and Žofie-Helene on a perilous journey to an uncertain future abroad.

Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson

Two families from different social classes are joined together by an unexpected pregnancy and the child that it produces. Moving forward and backward in time, with the power of poetry and the emotional richness of a narrative ten times its length, Jacqueline Woodson's extraordinary new novel uncovers the role that history and community have played in the experiences, decisions, and relationships of these families, and in the life of this child.

As the book opens in 2001, it is the evening of sixteen-year-old Melody's coming of age ceremony in her grandparents' Brooklyn brownstone. Watched lovingly by her relatives and friends, making her entrance to the soundtrack of Prince, she wears a special custom-made dress. But the event is not without poignancy. Sixteen years earlier, that very dress was measured and sewn for a different wearer: Melody's mother, for her own ceremony-- a celebration that ultimately never took place.

Unfurling the history of Melody's parents and grandparents to show how they all arrived at this moment, Woodson considers not just their ambitions and successes but also the costs, the tolls they've paid for striving to overcome expectations and escape the pull of history. As it explores sexual desire and identity, ambition, gentrification, education, class and status, and the life-altering facts of parenthood,  Red at the Bone most strikingly looks at the ways in which young people must so often make long-lasting decisions about their lives--even before they have begun to figure out who they are and what they want to be.

Permanent Record by Edward Snowden

Edward Snowden, the man who risked everything to expose the US government’s system of mass surveillance, reveals for the first time the story of his life, including how he helped to build that system and what motivated him to try to bring it down.

In 2013, twenty-nine-year-old Edward Snowden shocked the world when he broke with the American intelligence establishment and revealed that the United States government was secretly pursuing the means to collect every single phone call, text message, and email. The result would be an unprecedented system of mass surveillance with the ability to pry into the private lives of every person on earth. Six years later, Snowden reveals for the very first time how he helped to build this system and why he was moved to expose it.

Spanning the bucolic Beltway suburbs of his childhood and the clandestine CIA and NSA postings of his adulthood,  Permanent Record  is the extraordinary account of a bright young man who grew up online—a man who became a spy, a whistleblower, and, in exile, the Internet’s conscience. Written with wit, grace, passion, and an unflinching candor,  Permanent Record  is a crucial memoir of our digital age and destined to be a classic.

This Book is Literally Just Pictures of Cute Animals That Will Make You Feel Better by Smith Street Books

As its name subtly suggests, this book features eighty pictures of excessively cute animals. That's literally it. Among other gems, you can expect some cats flaunting some fabulous wigs, sloths dangling casually, otters holding hands (an actual thing that occurs in nature) and piglets wearing little rain boots for some adorable reason. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, this book is a landmark moment in the history of photojournalism.

While turning these puppy-peppered pages, your mood will literally become one of delight and tenderness. And therein lies the powerful magic of pictures of cute animals. Just simply peering into those big eyes carries with it all the gravitas of a David Attenborough nature documentary, but without having to actually watch a documentary.

The resilience of the animal kingdom is endlessly inspiring. Cast your mind to this iconic image: a kitten dangling from a tree branch, while sagely encouraging us humans to just "hang in there." And hang in there we did--in order to own this book. This is literally exactly what our turbulent world needs right now. With its unique meow factor, this is the book that you deserve after a ruff day at work. (It should be said that, mercifully, no animal puns are included in this book.)

Princess Samantha has always been a wild child, intent to break all the rules, until she starts to fall for the one boy she can't have. And Sam's twin brother, Prince Jefferson, is the nation's heartthrob, every girl's fantasy, including his perfect ex-girlfriend Daphne; but now there's another girl who might win his heart, even though the public doesn't find her acceptable. With all the appeal of reality television and royal fantasies, this book will draw you in to its love triangles and court intrigue. A fun first-in-series.

Ruby Finds a Worry by Tom Percival

Carefree Ruby loves playing and exploring the world around her. But one day she notices a Worry hanging around. At first she decides to ignore it, but it just grows bigger and bigger, and before long, it's so huge that it's all she can think about. Then she comes across a boy who looks as sad as Ruby feels and who also has a Worry. As the boy tells Ruby about his Worry, though, it begins to get smaller, and Ruby learns that talking about her Worry is a good way to make it go away. An excellent teaching book about managing worry, which everyone has and which you may come back sometimes, but can get better if you share it with someone who can help you through it.

The Stationery Shop by Marjan Kamali

The Stationery Shop is a story of love amidst revolution, of family, relationships, upheaval, and hope. It takes place in Iran, and is beautifully evocative in its description of the setting and of the culture. The characters are as real as old friends, and the book is so well-written that you'll never want to put it down. There are not enough words for this book. It is brilliant and it is poignant and it is beautiful and it is heartbreaking. It is stunning in its intricacy, the story haunting and heartwrenching. Painfully realistic, with a thread of hope and the amazement that everything always seems to come full circle in the end.

Me and the Sky by Beverley Bass

A huge lover of theatre, I first heard of Beverley Bass's story through the breathtaking musical Come From Away. The story of her dedication, resilience, and passion is a perfect fit for a picture book, one that I would give to any little girl with big dreams.

The Extinction Agenda by Michael Laurence

Conspiracy theorists beware! You may not sleep again after reading this one. It takes courage to write a 'world domination' book, but more than that, it takes incredible skill to deliver a story that enfolds the reader in a non-stop thrill ride of suspense. FBI Special Agent James Mason discovers what appears to be a plot to smuggle biological agents across the border. As he starts digging deeper, he finds dark forces opposing him who will stop at nothing to prevent their secret from being revealed. His relentless pursuit continues despite losing those closest to him as well as his FBI badge. The depravity of his enemy will make your skin crawl, and keep you glued to this one until the very end praying he will be successful in his quest. A great and unsettling read!

The Devil's Half Mile by Paddy Hirsch

The pictures Mr. Hirsch paints with his words of the infant New York city are brilliantly done as is his development of the characters in this book, in particular the main character Justy (Justice) Flanagan. I ended up tearing through this book and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the read.

The Chestnut Man by Soren Sveistrup

From the opening page to the surprise ending, you read this one with a gnawing sense of dread. This book is intricately plotted and tightly written. Thulin and Hess are complex characters and you can't help but feel a sense of impending doom following them every step of the way in their pursuit of The Chestnut Man. Sviestrup is a genius at painting a picture with his words and keeps you engrossed in this complicated and surprising story as it unfolds. This is an outstanding read and firmly places Soren Sviestrup in the top pantheon of Scandinavian thriller writers.

Cold Storage by David Koepp

Cold Storage is an anomoly. At least as much as a book I would best describe as a 'hilarious action thriller' could be. I love the action/suspense genre; such that if anyone proposed to me an action thriller that could be characterized as 'hilarious,' I would decline to read it. I'm sure glad I didn't do that in this case. This book is a sheer tour de force of reading entertainment. How David Koepp mixes the absurd with the serious is true genius. Read this book. You will not regret it - even if you put in in the guilty pleasure category, you'll walk away with the only guilt being that you liked this one as much as you did!

Southern Discomfort by Tena Clark

Tena Clark grew up a Mississippi tomboy during the 1950s-60s. Her wealthy dad ran with other women all over town. Her mom dealt with life by downing bourbon all day. Her parents' fights were legendary, and often involved guns and fists. Tena coped by turning to the family maid Virgie for comfort and the parenting she needed. Life didn't get any easier when Tena realized she was gay, and the implications that had down south. Tena tells her story with laughter, tears, and courage, and it is a story that I guarantee you will want to hear.

This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

This Tender Land is the story of four orphans and the twisted journey they take to escape their terrible orphanage in 1932. They meet many people on their journey, including both the noble and the dishonorable. The main character, Odie, learns about trust, love, and forgiveness. In fact, forgiveness is a theme throughout the novel that Kreuger explores. It isn't until each character experiences it that their journey is complete. (recommendation seconded by Brent!)

Lost and Found by Orson Scott Card

Lost and Found starts out as one kind of story, and seamlessly moves into another. Card has always had a talent for writing believable children. I love the idea of micro powers, and how even the smallest ability can be useful in the right circumstances.

Good Girl, Bad Girl by Michael Robotham

I have read and loved many Michael Robotham books in the past but it has been awhile. After listening to this one I will go back and read the ones I have missed as I had forgotten how much I enjoy his writing style and his characters. In Good Girl Bad Girl we are introduced to Dr. Cyrus Haven a forensic psychologist. He is working with the police on the murder of a teenaged girl and is also helping a friend try and understand a young girl who has been in foster care and ward of the state for years. Both Cyrus and Edie (the girl in care) have horrible experiences in their background. The difference is that Cyrus’s nightmare and his younger life were all made public but no one really knows what happened to Edie or who she really is. Cyrus was a truly interesting character and I enjoyed his interactions with the police detective who has mentored him for years and his interactions with Edie. Both cases kind of merge and we are left with some answers and a satisfactory, though surprising, ending to the murder case. But, Edie’s background is still mostly a mystery. I hope this means that this is the first in a series and Cyrus will be back to help Edie get out of care and on her way to leading a normal life.

The Nanny by Gilly Macmillan

The Nanny was all I hoped it would be - a wonderfully written, truly creepy evil story that I could not put down. There are dysfunctional families in thrillers all of the time, there are unlikeable characters, there are stories that start off slowly, there are some twists that aren’t that much of a surprise and yet it isn’t often that all of these can appear in one book that is absolutely brilliant. You won’t want to miss this latest installment by Gilly Macmillan. Especially recommended for fans of Ruth Ware.

William Morrow 2019  - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.99

The Long Call by Ann Cleeves

Ann Cleeves made up for ending the Shetland series by introducing us to a new series starring Detective Matthew Venn. I immediately fell in love with the area in North Devon and with Matthew, his husband Jonathan and his fellow police officers. The Long Call is a terrific police procedural that deals with lots of sensitive issues in a straight forward matter of fact manner. I can’t wait to learn more about Matthew and his earlier life as well as getting to know Jonathan and the other people of the village.

Minotaur Books 2019  - Format: Hardcover - Price: $27.99

The Whisper Man by Alex North

John Saul, Stephen King, and scary, haunting and creepy all come to mind when describing this masterfully plotted thriller. A young boy goes missing in a small town under circumstances eerily similar to the disappearances and murders of young boys 20 years earlier. Each hears a man whispering to him days before he goes missing. But, the perpetrator of that crime is in prison and was not known to have an accomplice. Besides being a page turning thriller Whisper Man is also an eye opening story of fatherhood both the very worst kind and the very best. People will be doing more than whispering about this one – you won’t want to miss it.
