So God created humankind in God's image...
A Note From Pastor Linda
In the perspective of infinity, our differences are infinitesimal. We are intimately related. May we never even pretend that we are not. ~Fred Rogers
Dear Human Family-
Sometimes finding common ground with another person can seem like an insurmountable task. Things can seem so polarized. Television is full of people yelling at each other, one representing the "left" and the other representing the "right"- each with their own spin on the truth. Our world seems to be focusing more on what divides us rather than on what unites us.
In this beautiful and powerful poem, Maya Angelou teaches us that we are all people; more alike than unalike.
From Human Family ~by Maya Angelou
...
The variety of our skin tones
Can confuse, bemuse, delight,
Brown and pink and beige and purple,
Tan and blue and white.
...
In minor ways we differ,
In major we're the same.
I note the obvious differences
Between each sort and type,
But we are more alike, my friends,
Than we are unalike.
...
We are all stuck in our own skin, which means we are limited by our own perspective and yet there is so very much that unites us. You cannot fully understand me because you have not walked in my shoes- AND, I cannot fully understand you, because I have not walked in your shoes.
WAIT! Could this understanding unite us?
Every person you meet is limited by our own perspectives. AND every person needs help to see a bigger perspective. No one (NO ONE) has all of the answers or sees everything clearly. Finding common ground can begin with recognizing our limitations; and since we are all limited, we are in good company!
Asking someone to tell you their story will almost always lead to some kind of common ground, a connection of some type even in the midst of differences.
What's your story? See you in CHURCH!

October Book Club: Born A Crime by Trevor Noah
Monday, October 7
7 PM in the Gathering Space
Trevor Noah's unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of
The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents' indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa's tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.
