The 2019 Faculty Retreat on September 13 featured several guest lectures/presentations, numerous awards to members of the faculty, a conversation with President and CEO Louis L. Levine, a presentation about CPME Accreditation self-study, by Matrona Giakoumis, DPM ('10), President of the Faculty Council and Michael J. Trepal, DPM ('81), VP of Academic Affairs and Dean, departmental meetings, and a wine and cheese reception at the end of the long day.

Kemal O. Yariv, PhD
Assistant Professor of Pre-Clinical Sciences
Director of Biochemistry
Dr. Kemal Oral Yariv earned his BS in molecular biology and genetics from Bogazici University in his native Turkey, with a minor in film studies, and came to the US in 2001 after earning that degree.
In 2008, he earned a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Miami, with a focus on genetics. Dr. Yariv took part in two post-doc programs: one at the Sylvester Cancer Center in Miami, where he worked on different treatments, and the second at the Genome Center in Miami, where he worked on hearing loss and other physical problems. ... Alumna Estelle Kagle, DPM ('40) Celebrates Her 100th Birthday!
This appreciation of Dr. Kagle was sent by her daughter, Dr. Arlene Kagle Lerner:
Dr. Estelle Kagle, Class of 1940, just celebrated her 100th birthday. She was a practicing podiatrist for 75 years, yes, seventy-five years, retiring at 96 only because her office assistant refused to learn the new Medicare system. When asked to what she attributes her long life, she insists it was work. "Podiatry has been very good to me."
Dr. Kagle practiced for many years with her husband Louis Kagle, Pod.D. who followed her into practice in 1957. She was respected and revered by her colleagues and her many patients, some, fifth-generation clients. One patient who saw her the day she returned to practice after breaking her hip at age 84, said, "You're not just my podiatrist, you're my role model."
As well she might be. Dr. Kagle was a professional woman as well as a mother of two, long before it was fashionable. She managed a highly successful practice while also being Den Mother for Boy Scouts, a fabulous cook and hostess and doing museum quality needlework. More recently, she has been playing competitive bridge.

Passing of Fred Liswood, DPM ('66)
 Fred Liswood, DPM, a 1966 graduate of NYCPM and the father of NYSPMA past-president Paul Liswood, DPM ('93), passed away in early September. Fred was father of a podiatrist, but also the son of a podiatrist -- Irving, a 1931 graduate of the First Institute of Podiatry (later NYCPM). Dr. Fred Liswood was one of the pioneers of office-based surgery. In June 2018, Dr. Paul Liswood founded the Liswood Family Fund scholarship; the fund has recently received a number of gifts from NYSPMA members in honor of Dr. Fred Liswood.

Murray B. Goldstein, DPM ('51) Dies
 This summer, Murray B. Goldstein, DPM ('51) passed away at age 94. He was a 1951 graduate of the Long Island University College of Podiatry (later NYCPM), following his service in the US Army. According to an appreciation in PM News, Goldstein, as president of NYSPMA, helped reverse a decision by a major insurer so that bunion surgery would be covered, and helped expand the scope of podiatric practices. He practiced in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, before relocating to Delray Beach, FL and ultimately becoming president of the Florida state society.

'Senior Day' Brings Health to 125

On August 28th, State Senator Brian Benjamin and New York City Councilman Bill Perkins sponsored a Senior Day Health Fair on the plaza in front of the State Office Building on West 125th Street. NYCPM students braved rain and unseasonable cold to screen attendees supervised by Eunice Ramsey-Parker, DPM ('85), Clinic Administrator.

Ephesus Health Fair Offers Many Wellness Options
Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church held its annual day-long community health fair on September 8 and it had literally something for everyone: a host of wellness and community activities, medical screenings and medical education sessions, music and refreshments. FCNY Supports ADA Walk at Seaport
2019 Step Out: New York City, the American Diabetes Association walk, took place on a sunny Saturday September 21, based at South Street Seaport, where four members of the Class of 2021 - Martin McGrath, Thanh Thao Nguyen, Guillermo Riestra (above) and Lindsay Short - tended to achy feet, supervised by Anthony R. Iorio, DPM, MPH ('81), Chair, Department of Community Medicine.

Almost 4,000 Party on Park Avenue
Party on Park on Sunday September 22, attracted almost 4,000 attendees and the participation of 75 organizations to the local Park Avenue community, which was closed to traffic. Staffing the FCNY table and providing foot screenings were Joseph S. Fox, DPM ('74), student Damien Pinkett (2023), and Mark Kosinski, DPM ('83) (above).
