Denny Moers at the Custom House Maritime Museum

Nine unquiet photographic landscapes by Rhode Island artist Denny Moers
will be on view at the Custom House Maritime Museum beginning October 4. "Denny Moers'

birds, and transcendent trees." Waterways & Beeches will remain on view at the Custom House museum
through December 20, 2019.
Dates of the seven 'waterworks' images in the exhibition range from 1994 t0 2018. These pieces are monoprints, meaning that each work is a unique, irreproducible image; the variation in photographs happens during the printing process. Two additional works in the show are limited-edition Archival Pigment Prints (of photographic monoprints) of beech trees -- images Moers created in collaboration with the late poet C.D.Wright, and which are included in her 2019 book Casting Deep Shade: An Amble. Before Wright's unexpected death in 2016, Wright was in the midst of a loving exploration of the beech tree. She called upon Moers, her neighbor, to share in that exploration.

Denny Moers' work has been deeply affected by both music and poetry. He writes, "[The process of] photographing and printing have always been that of transformation from the literal to the imagined, and from the seen to the felt."
In this exhibition, the Custom House Maritime Museum is pleased to present a first survey of Denny Moers' water-related images. All works are available for purchase.

About the Artist
Denny Moers received his MFA from the Visual Studies Workshop. During the 1980's he worked as Aaron Siskind's first assistant and printer. He is currently on the faculty of Roger Williams University. He received a RI Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts and is recipient of Rhode Island Council on the Arts Fellowship in Photography four (4) times.
Moers' photographic monoprints are included in over 30 public collections throughout the world including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, Huston Museum of Art, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Israel Museum in Jerusalem, High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City. Moers has two published books of his monoprints, Denny Moers: Figments of a Landscape and In the Ultra- Silent Light: Monoprints by Denny Moers.
New London Maritime Society's Custom House Maritime Museum is located at 150 Bank Street, New London, Connecticut. The Custom House Maritime Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 1 to 5 PM, or by appointment - call 860-447-2501. Admission is free for NLMS members, children age 14 and younger, and active-duty military and their families; and $7 for all others.
