A Message from the Dean...

Starve the Body, Feed the Soul
Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished."
- Luke 4:1
Have you ever considered the connection between Jesus' fasting and his facing the temptation by the devil? There is a saying, "Starve the body, feed the soul."
What this means is that we can choose either to live our lives according to the demands and delusions of the ego, to feed our animal appetites and live for pleasure or the lack of pain. Or we can choose to feed our soul, to be rich in the deeper things of life, to touch that deep part of our soul where holiness (the deep things of the Holy Spirit) dwells.
I once fasted for seventeen days, existing only on water. Really. The first five days were the hardest. After that my body-and my mind-started slowing down. I started to walk more slowly, talk more slowly, even think more slowly. I found myself thinking into my thoughts rather than rushing past them. It was a truly amazing time.
Jesus was able to face head-on and withstand the enemy's temptation, not in spite of not having eaten for forty days, but precisely because he had not eaten for forty days. Certainly his body was weak, but his soul was strengthened by his fasting.
Have you ever thought of doing something for the purpose of strengthening your soul? If you need some help on that score, come to our Lenten program on spiritual disciplines on Wednesday evenings. You'll learn some ways to protect your soul from the stress and strain of daily life.
