Update from the Executive Director

Greetings to our MCC members and friends! It's a drizzly dreary day outside with a mostly gray week predicted. It's up to us to serve as sunshine for each other!

As you know, several of us attended the Village to Village Network annual conference in Chicago last month. We learned a lot -- topics ranged from the village movement to social isolation, from intergenerational connections to fundraising for sustainability. We enjoyed hearing from Marc Freedman of Encore.org and author of How to Live Forever: The Enduring Power of Connecting the Generations, among others. (Let me know if you want to borrow my copy once I've finished reading it!)

I was impressed with a few of the conference sponsors and thought I would tell you about them. The first is GrandPad, a tablet for seniors. Touted on their website as "the smartest, simplest, and safest way to connect seniors with their loved ones."  Through the free GrandPad companion app and web portal, loved ones can connect to GrandPad's private family network via iPhone, Android phone, iPad, or desktop computer. The essential apps and services on the GrandPad eliminate the clutter, distractions and complications of other devices, allowing seniors to instantly connect with loved ones. Another sponsor that stood out for me was Silvernest, a matching service for homesharing. From a roommate finder to an agreement builder and beyond, Silvernest gives homeowners and renters the tools they need to create a Home Sweet Shared HomeĀ®. In all 50 states, Silvernest lets you choose how you want to homeshare, including the option to reduce your rent in exchange for help around the house.

Even The New York Times is talking about villages and homesharing in their recent article, "' We Need Each Other': Seniors Are Drawn to New Housing Arrangements." Although we are heading in the right direction, we are still figuring out how to stop age segregation. In an interview with Forbes, Marc Freedman said, "The fact is, for all the hand wringing and apocalyptic predictions, the needs and assets of the generations fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Just ask any grandparent! If we build on this natural bond between the older and younger generations, both within families and across different communities, we can avoid conflict, solve problems from child care to loneliness and even generate a good deal of personal happiness along the way."  Sounds good to me!

Rendezvous Readers' Book Chat
Wednesday, October 2, 10:00 - 11:00 am
Abiitan's Porter Cafe, 428 2nd St S
Join us to discuss  Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant--and that her lover is married--she refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son's powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations. Richly told and profoundly moving,  Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan's finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee's complex and passionate characters--strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis--survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history.

If you'd like to read ahead, November's book is  The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. Have a book suggestion for the Book Chat? Email  Marsha Blumenthal.

And, he was the last player (#262) taken by Oakland in the 2003 NFL draft, earning the annual "Mr. Irrelevant" title.

Driven to Discover: "Believe Me": Seeking Truth in an Age of Disinformation
Thursday, October 3, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
La Rive Party Room, 110 Bank St SE
Ask yourself: Can the public navigate a sea of disinformation without a compass? Are the media "the enemy of the American people," as President Trump has declared? Will the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution continue to protect journalists as they perform their jobs? Can democracy survive without a free and responsible press? Jane E. Kirtley, Director of the Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law at the U of M, digs deep into the role of the media in an era of "believe me" and disinformation.

This is one in an ongoing MCC program series under the banner "Driven to Discover." The series features University of Minnesota faculty and students sharing current research and programming at the University.
