Fast Track

THANK YOU for another GREAT Winter Conference!

Final attendance numbers are in for the 2017 Annual Winter Conference and we were just shy of 1,400 attendees, which breaks last year's record. The halls were packed with exhibitors and attendees for two full days of educational sessions, exhibitor receptions and awards events, and we can't thank everyone enough for contributing to the success of the conference this year!

If you have a Facebook account, make sure to check out the   MBI page to view photos and the awards videos if you weren't able to make it to the conference this year. We also put together a blog post about the conference that you might want to check out as well. A conference photo gallery will be up and ready for viewing on the MBI website later this week, so be sure to check back to see some of the many great shots our photographer was able to capture.

Be sure to save the date for next year's conference so that you don't miss out!

This year we were able to present the first Master Builder Achievement Award at the Annual Winter Conference.  The Master Builder Designation recognition program was started by MBI just prior to the 2012-13 training season.  The notion of the program is to encourage employees of MBI firms to strive for lifelong learning in the construction industry by granting credits for each course or program attended.  Credits are awarded in the areas of Leadership, Project Management, Ecological Construction, Ethics, and Safety, with virtually every education program that MBI offers providing credits in one or more of these areas.  The Master Builder Designation Achievement Award is earned when an individual surpasses 150 credits and fulfills the requirements in each of the areas listed above.  The first Master Builder Achievement Award was earned by Lee Hollatz of The Hansen Company! Congratulations Lee!

Employee performance occurs every single day therefore it's important for HR professionals to make sure tracking is also constant. Employees don't want to wait until the next performance review to find out if they are adequately doing their job! Without feedback and reassurance, you are neglecting to provide employees with the tools necessary to achieve their job responsibilities. In fact, 78% of employees said being recognized motivates them and companies that implement regular employee feedback see a 15% lower turnover rate.

The Society for Human Resource Management conducted a study of employees and identified that there are 7 deadly sins that employers should avoid when conducting performance reviews:
  1. Don't leave employees feeling slighted by conducting late evaluations
  2. Keep reviews relative and consistent throughout to avoid over-evaluation
  3. Don't be too vague- Provide clear, supportive examples
  4. Focus on results that will improve productivity
  5. Extremes- Avoid words such as "never" and "always"
  6. Make sure your comments match your numerical rankings to avoid any inconsistencies
  7. Stereotyping- Be objective to gender, age, etc.
