The 28th Annual  Goleta Lemon Festival, hosted by the  Goleta Chamber of Commerce and presented by Marborg Industries, will offer plenty of citrus-y fun in Girsh Park Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The festival celebrates the region's agricultural heritage, which dates back to when Sherman Stow - builder of Goleta's  Stow House - planted about 600 acres of lemon orchards on his ranch in 1875.

The festival is packed with fun for the whole family. Kids can enjoy an unlimited activity wristband for the rock wall, Euro Bungee, bounce houses and more. Live performances will be on the American Riviera Bank Main Stage,  which is centrally located between the food court, arts & craft vendors, and kids' rides and activities. Attendees can stay cool in the festive Lemon Lounge and enjoy beer from Hollister Brew Co. and M.Special Brewing Company along with cider from Santa Barbara Cider Co. and wine from SAMsARA Wine Co.

The popular Safety Street will be back! As an extra treat, the Sheriff's Mounted Enforcement Unit will be at the festival. Attendees are encouraged to say hi to the horses and get to know their deputies. In addition, the Sheriff's newest K9, Chop, will also be on duty exploring the grounds.

The crowd favorite Pie Eating Contest is back this year on the Main Stage at noon on Saturday and Sunday.

Proposed updates to the Santa Barbara Airport land-use planning map threatened to cause major changes to areas of Goleta, including our most important industrial complexes, retail centers and residential neighborhoods. However, adoption of the proposed draft plan has been delayed, allowing the Chamber and city officials to work together and shape a new process that more carefully considers Goleta's needs.

Previously, the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) announced an update to the Airport Land Use Compatibility Plan that would place new restrictions on land-use in airport approach and landing zones. The regulations would potentially cause up to 1,600 parcels in Goleta to become "legal non-conforming," meaning they would be out of compliance with current zoning codes, but could exist legally as is until any changes are needed at the property, such as an expansion or remodel, or a re-build after a disaster. The Chamber has vehemently opposed the legal non-conforming status change because it potentially lowers property values and creates layers of new regulations on existing or new buildings.

The airport is an important economic driver for Goleta, as asset for the entire business community and key component of the tourism economy for the entire County. Since the Santa Barbara Airport is located in Goleta, the rules are tricky to navigate. Of course, safety regulations are paramount to having the airport in the middle of our urban setting. The Chamber has worked for years to support a positive working relationship between the Airport and the Cities of Goleta and Santa Barbara.

Planning officials at the City of Goleta worked with our Public Policy Committee to identify and propose solutions to SBCAG that would satisfy all safety regulations while still respecting the existing zoning to key sites in Goleta.

Our concerns were addressed and the county-wide board voted to amend the proposed plan before bringing back for a vote.  Careful study and analysis are ongoing to create technical solutions to planning policies that will protect our residents and businesses.  A new plan will be drafted by all parties working together.
