Is it just me, or are we having a lot of rain lately?  Maybe it's my leaky roof at home that made me notice, or maybe our cancelled meeting in Yuba City a couple of weeks back (something about a leaky Oroville Dam).  In Eureka we are 19 inches of precipitation above normal, and even with a peek at Spring the other day, it doesn't look like we'll be getting much of a break soon.  It can start to wear you down.

But, even in this dreary (and sometimes trying) weather, AEDC has been enjoying a variety of activity. Our Spotlight on Success was a well-attended and fun event held at the Arcata Theatre Lounge.  We're getting a jump on Lemonade Day (a little summer in a cup); and we are collecting information to use when looking at our housing problems; and preparing our newly independent adults to be successful as they start to make more life decisions, while having a great time in our new workshop series "Adulting 101".

So check out the happenings at AEDC below, and don't worry, I will be getting a new roof installed at my house.  As soon as it stops raining...........

AEDC was happy to honor the  Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission at Spotlight on Success for their economic   impact to the area. Did you know that since July 2016,  there have been 13 shoots in Humboldt County, bringing in $746,000 in direct spending from out of the area? That doesn't happen on its own. Thanks Cassandra and Nate!

HSU Partnership

HSU student works on Housing Inventory for AEDC

Like many Humboldt County residents, Benjamin Stephens came to the North Coast to attend HSU. He arrived as a freshmen in August of 2013 and will earn his degree in  Economics with a minor in Business Administration this spring- one of the rare students completing his program in four years.

"This is my last semester at HSU," Stephens said, "I really wanted to get a hands on look at how the community functioned outside of the classroom. I had an interest in the more local level of economics and planning since most of my coursework in the past has been generally macroeconomic and international based."

Stephens landed at AEDC through his Rural Sustainable Economic Development course which requires community participation. He is focusing on local housing by compiling a spreadsheet of rentals throughout the area. It will take into account location, size and age of property, to give a better picture of the rental market.

"When we talk about the cost of rentals, we don't have any real detailed information. Currently, we only have a median cost for all rentals compiled by city. Different agencies are looking for this information to use to paint a more accurate picture of the rental housing market, and how it fits into the cost of living."

North Coast Regional
Manufacturer's Directory is online
  • The North Coast Regional Manufacturers' Network and Directory is now available online.  This project connects manufacturing assets with business needs.  The directory includes over 75 local businesses including those from food and beverage manufacturing, building and construction, niche manufacturing (including art, apparel, body care, housewares) and more.  It is constantly growing and evolving.
  • The goals of the directory include:
    • Advance and build the regional manufacturing industry cluster by facilitating the interconnection of capacities of manufacturers.
    • Develop opportunities for more production substituting locally-made for currently imported parts, products and packaging (Near sourcing).
    • Build trust among manufacturers, linking production capacities to bid on contracts to large or diverse for one manufacturer to handle- "flexible manufacturing networks"
    • Connecting innovators and manufacturers to knowledge about waste reduction and reuse and connecting available reusable and recycled materials.
    • Increasing regional production reducing the need for capital investment by shortening the supply chain by both distance and time,
  • The project has been coordinated by Maureen Hart under Redwood Coast Rural Action.  The directory is available here.  Find more information here. Or go directly to the directory here
